But then the trailer revealed that those designs aren't going to be used in the actual movie, thus making this project obsolete and giving the guys at /mlp/ something else to whine about.

/mlp/ decided to work on improving the Equestria Girls designs to make them look good.
Note the changes:
-removed ears, horns, wings, "tails," and cheek cutie marks (updated official designs have this too)
-human skin tones
-changes in clothing to better fit characters (AJ's jeans + boots, RD's shorts, etc)
-improved proportions
