ITS TIME YOU LEARNED ABOUT: MARY SUE Origin The term "Mary Sue" originated in 1974 from a Star Trek fanfiction, poking fun at unrealisticly perfect/gifted, adolescent characters appearing in fan fiction magazines, whom were actually vessals of wish-fufilment for the author. Consertively speaking. the term "Mary Sue" can only be applied to non-canon fan fiction characters who "steal the story" from canon characters. Example: Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way, from the Harry Potter fanfiction "My Immortal Example: Marina Seadrift from DisneyFan-0I's "Kingdom Hearts ripoff However With the declining quality of books, television, movies, et cetera, the term "Mary Sue" is being retroactively used to describe characters outside of fan fiction. This Sue requires a different definition: since they are usually the main character within original fiction, they are therefore incapable of "stealing the story" from other characters. Telltale Signs of a Sue: the Sue is instantly liked by all the other characters the Sue learns difficult things unrealistically fast multiple characters fall in love the Sue has no character flaws with the Sue for little reason or very insignificant flaws the Sue is unrealistically selfless the character is living the courageous, and/or intelligent author's fantasies Examples of Sues: Bella Swan from The Twilight Saga" Eragon from The Inheritance Trilogy" DEFINITION CHARACTER I DISLIKE Although it is common to dislike a Mary Sue, not every character you hate is one. It is possible for you to dislike a well rounded character who is not a Sue. Once you've known the atrociousness of Eragon and Bella Swan, it should be fairly easy to tell a Sue from a non-Sue. FINISHED! NOW YOU CAN AMAZE YOUR FRIENDS BY KNOWING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MARY SUE AND NOT-MARY SUE!
