I interpreted this as a call-back to the original Rarity-centric concept for "Spike at your Service" (i.e. Rarity treats Spike like a slave). Plus, Rarity foisting large amounts of baggage on people is a running gag from both "Sweet and Elite" and "Sleepless in Ponyville."
