Pokemon Science Something A lot of people don't realize is that most Pokemon designs are based on some amazing animal adaptations and scientific theories, even for some of the simplest designs. One example is Caterpie, it is based off of the Spicebush Swallowtail larvae, a caterpillar with an appendage on it's head made to mimic a snake's head. This is to ward off predators. It can also release a pepper-spray like chemical into the air around it. Poliwag is another interesting example, the swirl wasn't added because they were out of ideas, it's its intestines visible through the transparrent skin on a tadpole's belly Dugtrio is a strange pokemon based off a stranger animal. Dugtrio is based on the fact that naked mole rats live in colonies, often piling up on eachother to get around. It's also why it looks like a bunch of sausages with faces. Clauncher and its evolved form are based on the pistol shrimp, an animal so overkil that it fires a shockwave that is hotter than the surface of the sun to catch its prey. A real pistol shrimp as large as Clauncher would be easily one of the deadliest animals on the planet. Steel types may seem like one of the more improbable types of pokemon to exist in the real world but insects with metal appendages have been found. One example is the Ichneumon wasp which has been found to have a stinger made of metal. The ironclad beetle is another example with an exoskeleton harder than steel. When entymologists put this animal on display in glass containers they need to first drill a hole with a high powered drill then put a pin in it
