In middle school I did a research paper on pop. In my research I found this map and used it in my report.
I'm sure it's a little dated, however only the southern west coast and northern east coast tend to call it soda (New York, California you guys aren't all of America you know). Most of the north calls it pop and the south calls everything coke, because the south.
I don't care if you call it "soda" or "pop" (I personally say "soda"), but it pisses me off to no end when people use brand names for generic terms. I don't correct people, because contrary to popular belief I try not to be a dick, but it kills me inside when people say "Jell-O" for gelatin, "Kleenex" for tissue, "Q-Tips" for cotton swabs, and "Coke" for soda to name a few.
