If you have to form a (possibly illegal) gang to protect yourself because (I assume) the government won't do it for you, you're probably pretty oppressed. Think of the minorities that form some of the most well-known gangs in America: Blacks, Jews, Irish and Italian, the last two of which are Catholic and the other two speak for themselves.

One thing you've overlooked: The women in the shot from above are from INDIA. India is one of the most misogynistic countries in the non-western world.

They abandon (if not, kill) baby girls and sometimes even name them "Unwanted" in their language (was it Hindi or Tamil or Telugu, can't remember) if they have no choice but to keep them.

They're almost on par with China's level of misogyny, just that unlike China, they're practically lawless when it comes to this sort of thing.
