Most of that's in AAA, but recently Ive been indie. I don't know Zoe personally, but I've have had professional contact with some minor players in this drama Everyone should be aware that game journalists have always promoted their friends. It just wasn't (historically) as bad in AAA, because there's a wall of separation between dev and marketing. The PR guy making friends with press doesn't work on the game, so he has no personal stake. Obviously, corruption/nepotism exists in AAA, but for the most part it's a mutually beneficial professional relationship between two businesses facilitated by friendship But an indie developer is both the person making the game and doing the marketing. So if he or she is friends with a journalist, it completely ceases to become journalism at that point, and instead becomes a clique friendship thing. Journalists become emotionally invested in the success of their friends' projects. Plus, the "monetizing celebrity" aspect is a huge factor. Ad revenue, donations, etc With this current Zoe Quinn ordeal it doesn't matter there is a romantic element Fact is I've known terrible developers who put up their vaporware on Kickstarter and get funded for obscene amounts because they're best buds with a journalist with 100k+ followers. And that journalist gives them serious promotion which gets them funded. And indeed these projects fail, and it happens all the time Meanwhile, other projects put up by talented people don't get funded, because they aren't friends with journalists and aren't celebrities themselves. I was awkward, anti ial, had a lot of emotio sues, etc. Video games were my safe place for me from high school c bul from blowback hat's why they're bullies, The ortant in the co ative l ca whatever th ame development because I wanted to bring other people that same joy I experienced, and the same safe place l was fortunate to have The absolute worst part of this whole thing is that now games are "cool," suddenly the cool kids are back in charge. And they're bringing the same circle-jerk groupthink clique mentality to what is rapidly becoming an unsafe place for the awkward misfit teenagers like I was. You have to have the "right opinion or be ostracized. You have to be cool and trendy and tweet witty things to your thousands of followers, or nobody gives a s--- about you and your project. And if you are twitter-popular, everybody praises your video game "insights" regardless of whether you've actually made a game I'm never going to be a popular person. I'm happy just having worked out (most of) my issues, and being able to live like a person. But, fact is I have a project and I can't express my opinion publicly because l will inevitably be harassed by the very people claiming to be the champions of social justice, and they're immune from any accountability for their words or actions Also, journalists HATE getting called on their b-------, and use the power of their celebrity to punish individuals who do so. Do Not Incite Harm: You agree not to encourage harm against people Earlier this morning Zoe Quinn was Doxxed on Reddit. Though it did not originate here on /gaming, it found its way here eventually When Doxxing and witch hunts happen there is a set process we follow · ONE: Remove all offending content and report users up to Admin for ToS violations. Create automated methods to remove further Doxxing and threats TWO: Contact the person at threat to make sure they realize the situation, what Reddit is doing to ensure their safety, and that they know to contact Moderators and/or Admin regarding this situation. This is why reached out via twitter. This is a rule I hold myself to personally, and personally advocate for. Admin do not require this explicitly THREE: Assess the initial point of the Witch hunt. If it's a problem, lock the thread entirely so any further breaches aren't possible These are procedures that must be followed to ensure everyone's safety Currently we're having to remove a lot of posts and comments due to these three rules. We're getting throwaway accounts every few seconds, and those are hugely inflating the "deleted" numbers. We are doing our best to keep comments removed to only violations of these three rules (plus egregious violations of Rule 10). But they're happening at an alarming rate This meant that bullet point 3, "lock down the source" became a requirement. From that point on, any comment in that initial thread would be deleted by Reddit Again, that thread is locked by the system and so anything added -- good, bad or otherwise will be instantly removed That said, in the Total Biscuit thread currently on our front page, we are doing our best to ensure both humarn moderators and automoderator allow through non-threatening, non-witch hunting, non-doxxing information. Clearly a thread with over 9,000 different comments in it plus an automated solution is going to create a lot of false positives so if you feel your comment has been removed in error, please message us and we'll review and let through To be explicitly clear: We are fine with you disliking whomever you want. The rules do not protect anyone from criticism, bad press, or the likes If you feel Ms. Quinn's actions (alleged or fact) are deplorable, say so. If you feel her game is awful, expound on that. If you want to boycott her entire professional standing, that is your right within the terms of service Reddit, the automoderator, the gaming moderators, and I personally will do our best not to abridge negative discourse. But the posted rules, and the requirements of being a moderator here, make it very clear that we cannot allow /gaming to put another person's life in danger Users in /gaming (and elsewhere on Reddit) have done this before Users have singled out individuals to genuinely horrifying degrees.
