GamerGate - SJWs are old news

PapayaSF 2 days ago In many ways Gamergate seems like an extension of what the social justice warriors have been doing in science fiction and fantasy fandom in recent years. Fandom is supposedly a hotbed of racism and sexism and homophobia, a bizarre charge to anyone who has been in it for a long time. Of course, there is bad behavior in both areas: fans and gamers are often socially-awkward geeks, duh. But in the SJW worldview, it's not enough to tell individuals to knock it off and be polite. No, anything the most thin-skinned might object to is a manifestation of a dreaded "ism" or "phobia," so everything is escalated to a civil rights issue, if not civil war. There's lots of self-serving posturing and being offended on behalf of other people SJWs are in the same category as other social reformers, and I don't mean suffragettes and civil rights campaigners. I mean Anthony Comstock, Prohibitionists, League of Decency types, Fredric Wertham, even old-time Christian missionaries: self appointed guardians of other people's morals. It's the same condescending censorious, blue-nosed, self-righteous attitude, just with different content. (And not always different: the old bluenoses objected to "bad language and depictions of sexy women, too.) Instead of the "I'm following the Bible and you're not" attitude, the SJW viewpoint is that members of designated victim groups (and their champions) are allowed to criticize anyone, but nobody can criticize them, because racism/sexism/homophobia. By self-definition, it's what "good" people believe, and if you don't agree, you're not "good." It's neatly self-contained and designed to be immune from criticism Unfortunately, the SJW worldview has made great strides in science fiction world. It's cost some people their jobs, gotten a number of guests of honor disinvited from conventions, gotten awards for sub-standard but politically correct stories. Even calls for race and gender quotas in fiction are taken seriously. But perhaps the tide is turning, with these revelations of self-serving actions and corruption among the "enlightened" "defenders of the oppressed." Good 14 ^ | 、 . Reply . Share
