How to Respond to a Death Threat A Public Service Announcement ANNOUNCEMENT From #GamerGate In response to the threats and harassment received by both sides The internet isn't always the friendliest place. Anonymity and pseudonymity can sometimes lead to behavior that wouldn't be tolerated face-to-face. Some people are just trolls who want to get a reaction. This is often annoying, but usually harmless. But what should you do if someone takes things too far? What should you do if you receive death threats? Contact the proper authorities immediately. Call your local police department. You can also report threats you see to https://tips.fbi.gov/. If you received the threat on a social media website such as Twitter, be sure to report the threat to that website's staff as well. REMEMBER that trolls and harassers often behave the way they do because they want a reaction. When dealing with online harassment, remain calm and do not let your emotions take control. It may be tempting to react emotionally, but doing so will only give your harasser what they want and, in their mind, validate their behavior. Save all evidence of the threat that you can. Anything that you can provide to law enforcement officials will help their investigation. Do NOT publicly announce that you have received threats. Doing so only gives your harasser the reaction they want and makes things more difficult for law enforcement. Tell the proper authorities and no one else. Do NOT publicly announce plans to leave your home, and certainly do not say where you intend to go. If you fear that your life is in danger, the worst thing you can do is give someone who wishes to do you harm information on how to find you. If any personal information such as your address or phone number has been posted (doxxing), do NOT publicly announce this. Publicly announcing that you have been doxxed will only spread your personal information further and put you in greater danger.
