what if this happened:

and then their children were rhinoceros that had had to flee from europe to africa passing thru middle east. Thus that's why they were still saw as unicorns in their "essence" even if their ancestors' pure blood was long diluted….

or simply they saw that they (the rhino's) were one-horned quadrupedes and therefore "unicorns".
