Good writing vs bad writing Here's an example of good writing, from the novel The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald: When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention foreverI wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart. Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction Gatsby, who epresented everything for which l have an unaffected scorn. If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away. This responsiveness had nothing to do with that flabby impressionability which is dignified under the name of the "creative temperament." it was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again. No- Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men. Here's an example of bad writing, from the novel A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin: Sunset found her squatting in the grass, groaning. Every stool was looser than the one before, and smelled fouler. By the time the moon came up she was s------- brown water. The more she drank, the more she shat, but the more she shat, the thirstier she grew, and her thirst sent her crawling to the stream to suck up more water. When she closed her eyes at last, Dany did not know whether she would be strong enough to open them again See the difference? In case you don't, l'm here to help spell it out for you. Fitzgerald's writing shows a true mastery of writing, evoking beautiful imagery in our minds and sympathy for Gatsby and the narrator. Martin's writing shows that he has a limited vocabulary, repeating the word "s---" and its derivatives. In Martin's novel as well (unpictured), a penis is never a penis, but a "c---;" a vagina never a vagina, but a "c---;" and so on and so forth. It is for this reason that Fitzgerald is seen as a great writer and Martin a terrible one.
