Am I The Only One Around Here (also known as "Angry Walter") is an advice animal image macro series featuring a screenshot of the character Walter Sobchak (played by John Goodman) drawing a gun in the 1998 comedy film The Big Lebowski. The captions often convey the feeling that the poster is alone in holding an unpopular opinion.
Origin
The original image was captured from a scene in the 1998 Coen Brothers comedy film The Big Lebowski in which the character Walter Sobchak becomes frustrated by another character stepping over the line while bowling. After expressing his frustration to his teammates, he draws a hand gun and asks "Am I the only one around here who gives a shit about the rules?" (shown at :57 below).
The first image macro using the quote was posted by Redditor BFM11 to the /r/AdviceAnimals[1] subreddit titled "Angry Walter" on March 24th, 2012. The caption expressed the poster's frustration with the misuse of the word "literally" and used a screen capture from a different scene in the movie.
Spread
On April 23rd, 2012, Redditor phizzleout posting an image macro to the /r/AdviceAnimals[2] subreddit with the caption "Am I the only one around here / who doesn't upvote reposts?" (shown below, left). Within two hours, Redditor TLAMP28 submitted a similar image macro to the /r/AdviceAnimals[3] subreddit with the caption "Am I the only one around here / who is sick of reposts within the same day!" (shown below, right).
In the following weeks, the series was featured on We Know Memes[4], MemeCrunch[5] and ZipMeme,[6] with additional instances appearing on Tumblr under the tags "angry walter"[7] and "am i the only one around here."[8] As of July 2012, the Memegenerator[13] page for "Am I the Only One Around Here" has 262 submissions, the Quickmeme[12] page for "Am I the Only One Around Here" has 1,851 submissions and another Quickmeme[11] page for "Angry Walter" has 3,693 submissions. On Reddit, there are 150 instances of "Angry Walter"[9] and 120 instances of "am i the only one around here."[10]
