barackobamaisyournewbicycle.com was created by San Francisco freelance writer and Wired contributing editor Mathew Honan in February 2008. Classified as a single-serving site, users would see random Barack Obama non sequiturs.

Quickly, the site gained a large following. The hotly contested presidential race fueled the growth of this meme, which produced various spin-offs, including Hillary Clinton is your new bicycle (defunct), Sarah Palin in your new bicycle’s flat tire, and The ‘… Is Your New Bicycle’ Meme Is Your New Bicycle. Other political single-serving sites were made for John McCain, Michelle Obama, and Ron Paul.

In August 2008, the book Barack Obama Is Your New Bicycle: 366 Ways He Really Cares was published, which included 366 Obama non sequiturs.

Some examples from the site and book include:

  • Barack Obama danced with your mom at your sister’s wedding
  • When one of your vocalists came down with a nasty bronchitis bug, Barack Obama sang backup in your band
  • Barack Obama left a comment on your blog
  • Barack Obama warmed up your car for you
