Origin

Also known as “Pessimist Dog” or “Ugly Dog”, Cynical Dog is another derivative of Advice Dog, and is reported to have been first seen on the popular internet imageboard, 4Chan, as a reply to a picture of an extremely overweight woman, claiming to need money to support her child and herself, due to the current economic troubles in the US.

Cynical Dog is actually Sam, the ugliest Worlds Ugliest Dog from 2003-2005. Unfortunately, Sam was euthanized in November 2005 at nearly 15 years of age due to heart failure.

Derivatives

Cynical Dog seems to suggest that whenever you do something good, something else that is equally as bad (or worse) will happen that will counteract the effect of the good thing that happened, leaving you feeling one step lower than when you started off reading it. The macros of Cynical Dog generally follow the “Corrupt-A-Wish” type responses.

Another popular derivative of this meme is in the format of “You do X / You did Y”, in which X is generally a good thing, and Y is generally a bad reaction to X.
