Spehss Mehreens originated from the computer Real-Time Strategy game Dawn of War: Soulstorm. In that game, the player can take control of one of 9 factions from the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game. One of these factions is the Space Marines of the Blood Ravens chapter, lead by Commander Boreale. When playing another faction and assaulting the Space Marine stronghold, Commander Boreale gives a speech to his fellow Space Marines, where he explains his stronghold’s defenses, and how they are guaranteed to win. The cut-scene is notorious for Boreale’s rather silly and heavy accent, leading to certain lines sounding way off, such as his own faction.
The Speech, as edited to replicate Boreal’s accent.
“Tehre is noh time to beh lohst!
Spehss Mahrens, todeh the enemeh is at oua doar! We know oua duteh and we will do eet. We fight for our honor as Blod Rehvens,
as SPESS MAHRENS, and we fight in the nehme of the Empra!
And if we die this deh we die in gloareh, we die heroes’ deffs, but we shall not die, no! It is the enemeh who will tehste
deff and defeat!
As you know! Moast of oua battle brothars are shtehtioned in SPEHSS, Pruhpeared to deep strike! Oua perimeter has been
pruhpeared in the even dat oua enehmies should be so bald and so foolish. We have plehced numerous beacons, allowing for
muhltiple, simuln-tehneous and devashtehting defensive deep strikes
The Codecks astartees nehmes this maneuvah Steel Rehn. We will descend upon the foe, we will ovawhelm them – we will leave none
alive! Meanwhile oua ground fawses will ensue the full defense of oua headkwaters
We are the spehss mahrens! WE ARE THE EMPRA’S FUREH!"
Later on, on May 30, 2009, Youtube User battosai810 created “Dawn of Awesome”, where upon he replays the infamous cut-scene, with drawings obviously intended to make fun of Boreale’s silly accent. Notably, whenever Boreale says “Space Marines”, the video puts, in subtitles below, “Spess Mehreens”, a spelled-out version of Boreale’s accent.
Because of Boreale’s rather notable accent, the cutscene is used quite often for Youtube Poop videos, most likely because of just how idiotic Boreale sounds for a supposedly “Bad-ass” Space Marine. Notably, as of Dawn of War II, Commander Boreale is listed as “Killed in Action”, along with 5 full companies of Space Marines, a full 50% of the Blood Raven’s forces. One of the survivors, Scout Sergeant Cyrus, claims that “The Karuva campaign was a mistake. I will speak no further of it”, in reference to the fact that Soulstorm was rather underwhelming, and in fact fairly poorly-constructed.

Boreal’s accent has become a popular trend among wargamers and 40k enthusiasts for referring to the Space Marine (Sphess Mehreen) faction and, as an extension, their leader The Emperor (Emprah), in a way to make fun of or to mock the over-done or stereotypical characteristics that a Marine has. (Ex: Spess Mehreens serve teh Emprah!). The fad has led to many comical drawings of Marines and their allies, almost always with the phrase"For teh Emprah!" being found all over the internet. Many sites have caught on to the fad, such as DakkaDakka, Far-seer, Tau-Online, and, predictably, 4Chan, where Mehreens pop up on any number of boards.
