It Was Time for Thomas to Leave is a reaction image of Thomas the Tank Engine captioned "It was time for Thomas to leave. He had seen everything." It is generally used in reaction to something the person particularly overwhelming.
Origin
The image is a screengrab of the Thomas & Friends episode, "Thomas, Percy and the Coal," which first aired in 1989.[1]
The image's first known use as a reaction image was posted on February 1st, 2016, by Twitter user @kegan_garvey.[2]
Spread
The image did not start gaining traction as a meme until the end of 2016. On August 26th, 2016, it was posted to the Sonic Stadium forum by user Joy[3] who said "Really, this needs to be used on the internet for any 'time to bail' reactions." It began seeing more usage in December of the year; on December 7th, Twitter user @chelllssseeea[4] used it in reaction to a tweet by Newt Gingrich that gained 365 retweets and 1,280 likes (shown below).
On February 13th, 2017, SirJilliumz[5] submitted an example of the image to /r/memeeconomy.
