Origin

Moskau is a song from 1979 by the German band Genghis Khan.

The song was released in Australia in 1980, the year of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Australia’s Channel 7 used the song as the theme to their television coverage of the Moscow Olympics. The song became a big hit in Australia, staying at #1 for five weeks.

Funny thing is, according to wikipedia, they create the band first to take part in the 1979’s Eurovision Song Contest in wich they ended up at the 4th place.

According to some French web-articles on this, the Moskau clip began to be featured on Internet in 2004. Because of its kitsch-looking tackiness and some choreography mishaps, it became instantly famous from that point.
