Moskau (renamed in English as Moscow) is a song released in 1979 by the German pop band Genghis Khan. Online, the song is known for its catchy tune, and the original dance moves performed by the singers in the official music video.

Origin

First released in Germany, Moskau proved to be fairly popular within the disco-pop audience, and would be released in Australia in 1980; the year of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Australia's Channel 7 would use this song as the theme to their television coverage of the Moscow Olympics. The song became a big hit in Australia, staying at #1 for five weeks, as well with becoming an underground sensation within the Soviet Union.^[1]

Spread

With the advent of the internet, Moskau would become subject to the then-popular YTMND fad, with the first reference to the song created on May 24th, 2004 by author fouljax.^[2] Following the minor success of fouljax's work, the Moskau would prove to be a popular song to utilize, being kick started on April 7th, 2005 by author diaboloco's YTMND.^[3] However, the highest scoring YTMND referring to the Moskau would eventually be created on May 23rd, 2007 by CraterCreator, with their YTPMV receiving a rating of over 4.55 stars,^[4] making use of Phonetic Translations.

YouTube

Shortly after YouTube's launch in 2005, Moskau would gradually spread, with the first ever instance of the song being uploaded on October 4, 2005. (Now deleted) The most popular version of the original music video would be uploaded on September 15, 2006 by YouTuber Victor Mendoza (formerly vemendoza)^[5] reaching over 12 million views by January 2017. The viral success of the video would result in a series of remix videos, primarily utilizing the Heavy Weapons Guy and other popular Valve characters.
