OMGWTFBBQ (2001)

added Jan 04, 2010 at 10:53PM UTC

part of a series on Internet Slang

Definition

OMGWTFBBQ stands for “Oh My God What The F*ck Barbecue.” Little more than a meaningless jumble of acronyms, the phrase can be seen as a parody of popular internet acronyms in usage. To some extent, it has been also used to express confusion or lack of understanding, especially in the midst of incoherency.

Origin

The earliest usage of OMGWTFBBQ can be traced to Something Awful forums, where it was primarily used to mock other people’s excessive use of three-letter acronyms like OMG and WTF. The phrase became further popular through its usage in chatrooms and online games.

The Urban Dictionary entry for OMGWTFBBQ was submitted in January 2004; it was also featured as the word of the day in September 2007.

Spread & Usage

This phrase is also used often by Master Chief in the Machinima series Arby ‘n the Chief, which has contributed to its spread in the gaming community, just as the ’OMGWTFBBQ’ Achievement in Team Fortress 2 has.

This phrase has been also referenced in other internet phenomena, most notably LOLCAT image macros on icanhascheezburger.com and Demotivational Posters. Some derivatives of the image macros depict actual barbecues, and icanhascheezburger has even had its shirt of the day as an ‘omfwtfbbq’ shirt with a grill on it.

Derivatives

  • There are other known forms of the phrase, such as “omgwtfbbqsauce” (which is typically accompanied by image macros with barbecue grills) and ‘omgwtfbbqhax’ (often used in chats during gameplay). ‘WTFBBQ’ also turns up, often as the far more perplexed and less exaggerated variant of the phrase.

Please tell me why. There are plenty of phrases in the Internet Slang category that don’t have many image derivatives but are seen practically everywhere and yield significant search results.

I don’t mind constructive criticism on my first entry, but don’t try trolling me.

I remember typing this on IM when I was 14 in 1998 thinking I was being original.

I think it’s one of those “automatic conclusions” that people come to soon after using chatspeak acronyms.
