Oppressed GamerGater is an image macro series featuring a photograph of a screaming child captioned with various commentaries relating to the video game journalism ethics controversy. The character was initially born to mock those who stand at odds with female video game developers in the wake of Zoe Quinn's affairs controversy and events that unfolded thereafter, sometimes referred to pro-GamerGaters, but it soon became re-appropriated by the aforementioned camp into mocking the viewpoints and stances expressed by the anti-GamerGaters.

Origin

The advice animal character was born during the GamerGate controversy. On October 9th, 2014, Twitter user Spacekatgal^[4] posted the first instance of the image macro series Oppressed GamerGater to criticize the GamerGate community. Including the image series of a child from one of the PowerPoint template^[3].

Spread

In counter-response, on the imageboard site 8chan, man users began flooding the Oppressed GamerGater page on Meme Generator with messages mocking the anti-gamergate community^[1], during which they also engaged in a high amount of Baneposting. In less than 48 hours, more than 1,300 instances of the Oppressed GamerGate were submitted to the Meme Generator page.^[2]
