About

Put That Cookie Down is an exploitable soundbite taken from a peculiar scene in Jingle All the Way, the 1996 holiday comedy film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a “family man”. Double-contrasted by the actor’s well-known roles in one-man action films and current position as the Governor of California, Arnold’s utterance of “Put That Cookie Down” became the subject of parodies and mash-up videos on YTMND and YouTube.

Origin

Jingle All the Way is a Christmas family movie starring famous actor Arnold Schwarzenegger as Howard, a workaholic father struggling to appease his family for the holiday season. While running around town to find the perfect Christmas gift for his son, Howard (Arnold Schwarznegger) finds out his overly friendly neighbor Ted (Phil Hartman) is hanging out at Howard’s home with his wife, eating fresh baked cookies. A funny discussion about cookies quickly ensues:

In early 2005, a number of YTMND mash-ups began to emerge, depicting Arnold Schwarzenegger with a raging crave for cookies using various footage and quotable soundbites from his serious action movies. At first, parodies mostly involved the phrase “Who told you you could eat my cookies” from the movie, but later mutated into a larger story involving any famous characters played by Arnold and his obsession with his cookies.

Following this trend, 2 YTMND instances were created in 2006, specifically named after the “Put that cookie down” catchphrase:

At the same time, some Youtube re-enactements and parodies can be seen starting in 2007:

You ate my cookie

Ho Man, Ho God! variation

These catchphrases were also used in soundboard prank calls:

A second better version was made the following year:

This version got popular pretty quickly, and was also used by the Nostalgia Critic in many occasions, the first one being for his “Last action hero” review from July 2009:

Which helped spread it even further.
