About

Ruby a.k.a. Wuby, full name as Ruby Tang, is a Youtuber from Hong Kong who began to upload videos in March 2010.

She was an attendee of the Hong Kong Certificate Education Exam(HKCEE) of 2010, which is abolished now

Her videos became the target of mockery and rage during mid-2010 because of Ruby’s English and Cantonese pronunciation and the content of her video.

Origin

Ruby, who has a Youtube account called RubyManT, started to upload videos to Youtube since March 2010. Here’s her first video, which was about her revising the books for the HKCEE (uploaded on March 1, 2010).

The first video didn’t cause a big blast of attention to her videos. However, when she uploaded her second video, in which she teaches her audience to make DIY stuffs, attention to her video started to grow as the netizens think that she was teaching something that everybody knows how to do. Here’s her second video, which teaches the audience how to decorate daily accessories.

With the opening of “Hi, everyone! Ruby here”, she showed the flaw that she had shown in her first video, her poor English pronunciation.

In the third video, which is about the White Valentine’s Day, she introduced another target of mockery in her videos, the bizarre and fail closing, which is “Ruby, close!”

Probably because the not-fully-covered-camera at the last second of every further videos she uploaded, it’s mocked by the netizens as a fail with poor pronunciation as “wuby, cose!”

The content of her video gets weirder and weirder. In the videos after her 3 videos at the beginning, she teaches the audience how to have barbeque at home with a toaster, summer hairstyle etc. Until mid-April 2010, the meme blasted.

Spread

In April 20 2010, Ruby uploaded a video which started the blast. In this English spoken video, she criticized against an invigilator of the first exam she faced of the HKCEE exam. In this video, her flaws in English pronunciation was once poured onto the internet. (English starts at 1:22)

The video was widely covered by various media and it was discussed by the netizens on hkgolden. Ruby was also outvoted and has been the Star of April 2010 on hkgolden. However, most of the response to this video was negative. Various Youtubers, mostly behind masks, criticized against, mocked and even spoofed her poor English pronunciation. For instance, she deleted critical video, but many netizens has downloaded the video and uploaded copies of the video. Also, the video uploading of RubyManT was stopped.

Youtube user felxtang’s commentary:

Some hkgolden members asked for revealing her personal information, but some asked to forgive her. On April 22 2010, Ruby has changed her blog into private mode to prevent being revealed. However, some hkgolden really forgave her and deified her as a “goddess”, some even launched the “Goddess Ruby International Fan Club” and many people joined.

Return

On June 21 2010, Ruby uploaded a video titled Thank Yall. In the video, she explained that she didn’t even turn on her computer during the HKCEE because of the intensity of the examination, so there was no video being uploaded during late April to mid-June. She also thanked her fans for their support.

After all the fame she has got from the teacher-criticizing video, she has continued to make videos and upload them to her youtube channel.

On April 27 2010, Youtuber RiCoXanophon uploaded a video titled “sigh, the pretty girls nowadays (CHINESE RICK ROLL)” (with English subtitles), which features Ruby in the video. This is a rap song video with an English chorus, which challenges Ruby’s pronunciation, both in Cantonese and English.
