About

“Shit Tyrone, Get It Together” is a catchphrase expression typically used to indicate that significant improvement needs to be made. The phrase is often accompanied by a stillshot of a Jeopardy! game show contestant named Tyrone, whose negative balance of -$ 1,500 clearly stood out from the other participants’ positive scores.

Origin

The game show contestant, Tyrone Rogers from Maryland, appeared on Season 25, Episode #5727[1] of Jeopardy! which aired on June 30th, 2009:

The original instance of “Shit Tyrone, Get It Together” image macro was reportedly posted on 4chan, according to various accounts on Tumblr.[2] The image was reblogged by humor sites Monorail[3] and Funny Junk[4] on September 13th, 2009 and later picked up via Stumbleupon.[5]

Spread

In the following months, the image gradually spread across other photo-sharing platforms like DeviantART[6], Flickr[7], and PhotoBucket.[8] The image was particularly well received on Tumblr[9], where the phrase “Shit Tyrone, Get It Together” became closely associated with moments of FAIL or loss of composure. Several derivative images and animated GIFs[10] have since surfaced under the tag “shit tyrone get it together,” some of them garnering hundreds of thousands of likes and reblogs.[11][12] The expresion has also gained some momentum on Facebook[14][15], where there are two pages dedicated to the catchphrase with various captioned images depicting failures of popular TV characters and actors named Tyrone.
