If you have any information on the origin of the phrase it would be appreciated.
“This is delicious cake. You must eat.”
The above phrase was commonly used on the image board 4chan to refer to having a strong desire to do something even if choosing that course of action would result in undesired consequences. The phrase was primarily used as related to jail time for the viewing of child pornography with “delicious cake” referring to the illegal content.
Some of the early uses of this phrase is derived from the puzzle game Portal in which cake is the supposed reward for completing tasks. However, the game never says the exact phrase but rather The Cake is a Lie.
In 2008 a fansubber possibly referenced the meme in the anime Kanokon. Although the wording doesn’t specifically say “eat”. This instance has lead to some confusion over the origin of the phrase.
This phrase is most commonly used in images that depict a character or person holding a cake with a line of text informing the reader of its deliciousness and the imperative to consume it.
Cake Image Puzzles
A game usually played on 4Chan’s /b/ board. To play, a user will post an image of a cake in some sort of situation that requires a bit of effort to get to the cake. Other users must post an image of their creative, and usually nonsensical, solutions to the puzzle. This continues until the thread 404s or another puzzle is posted.
