“This is relevant to my interests” was the catch phrase on one of the very first cat macros featured on icanhascheezburger.com when it was launched on January 11th, 2007. While this is the primary instance that started much of the trend, the image appeared elsewhere before this.

This identical instance appears on a Flickr photostream of 4chan-related images, uploaded on November 16, 2006 by the boy on the bike.

The image appeared on Encyclopedia Dramatica in September of 2006.

The phrase “This is relevant to my interests” also appears on this Gaia Online thread on November 19th, 2006.

Google Insights

Searches for “this is relevant to my interests” began in April of 2007 and experienced their first major peak in June, coinciding with the all time peak popularity of Caturday.
