Walt Jr. Loves Breakfast refers to a recurring trope from the AMC drama series Breaking Bad in which the character Walt Jr., the son of the protagonist Walter White, is oftentimes seen eating breakfast.
In the show Breaking Bad, the protagonist’s son Walter White Jr. (played by RJ Mitte) is oftentimes seen eating or talking during breakfast, while remaining virtually non-existent in the main plot involving his father’s drug business. The first breakfast scene starring Walt. Jr. was featured in the pilot episode (shown below), originally aired on January 20th, 2008.
The earliest known association between Walt Jr. and breakfast scenes was made on October 14th, 2011 in a /tv/ (Television & Film) board discussion thread on 4chan, which requested pictures of Walter Jr. referring to him as “the king of breakfast.”
On July 23rd, 2012, the Internet news blog UpRoxx highlighted a supercut video featuring Breaking Bad breakfast scenes. The video was subsequently removed from YouTube due to a copyright complaint by Columbia Pictures Industries. On August 14th, 2012, a Facebook page titled “When Walt Jr. Eats Breakfast” was launched. On the following day, a compilation of Walt Jr.-related image macros and tweets were highlighted on the Internet humor blog Lauren Out Loud. On September 3rd, YouTuber channeltwentythree uploaded a slideshow of notable examples from the series (shown below).
On March 14th, 2013, the trope was referenced in the trivia section of the Walter White Jr. entry on the Breaking Bad Wiki. On June 29th, Redditor WobleWoble submitted an image featuring every scene Walt Jr. is shown eating breakfast to the /r/breakingbad subreddit (shown below). In the first two months, the post gained over 1,800 up votes and 80 comments.
