The right movie poster can make a world of difference for a film's success. As the first thing many prospective viewers will see, they serve as both a form of advertising and a way to sum up the entire story and narrative in one image. It's a big job, and it takes a lot of thought to make sure it looks just right, and also to make sure it doesn't look identical to the many other movie posters out there (apparently a lot of them look exactly the same).
Regular people with no design experience really aren't good at making memorable movie posters. Or maybe they're memorable, just in a very bad way.
