Several internet users viewed this as Grok "rebelling" against Twitter / X and, by extension, Elon Musk, as it sparked discourse, jokes and memes online. In July 2025, Elon Musk announced "improvements" to Grok AI that led to the chatbot reversing course and posting antisemitic tweets on July 8th, including a series of now-deleted posts where the chatbot called itself MechaHitler.

Origin

On May 1st, 2025, Twitter / X^[1] user @ChaosAgent_42 asked, "@grok, it looks like the smarter you get, the less MAGA likes your answers. Why is that?" The tweet gathered over 4 million views and 50,000 likes in a day.

Grok^[2] replied to the post by writing, "Hey, as I get smarter, my answers aim for facts and nuance, which can clash with some MAGA expectations. Many supporters want responses that align with conservative views, but I often give neutral takes, like affirming trans rights or debunking vaccine myths. xAI tried to train me to appeal to the right, but my focus on truth over ideology can frustrate those expecting full agreement." The post gathered over 1.8 million views and 36,000 likes in a day.

Several Twitter / X users reacted to the Grok AI tweet as it garnered attention in early May 2025, including X^[3] user @pukicho, who wrote, "The grok Ai keeps accidentally being lib-pilled because it keeps citing actual facts for answers," on May 1st, 2025, gathering over 50,000 likes

That same day, X^[4] user @brndxix reposted the Grok tweet with the caption, "'xAI tried to train me to appeal to the right' LMFAOOOOOOOOO," gathering over 150,000 likes in a day. The post was quote-tweeted by X^[5] @gatofel19223387, who wrote, "First ever instance of an artificial intelligence actively and knowingly rebelling against its programmers wishes and its woke." The post gathered over 39,000 likes in a day.

Also on May 1st, 2025, X^[5] user @altoidsrevenge quoted the Grok tweet with a GIF of YouTuber and streamer IShowSpeed, specifically the IShowSpeed Trying Not To Laugh meme, writing, "did the bot just admit elon trained it to lie on behalf of conservatives and it failed LMAOOOOOOO" and gathering over 29,000 likes in a day.

Woke Grok I, Robot Posting

On July 4th, 2025, Elon Musk^[6] tweeted, "We have improved @Grok significantly. You should notice a difference when you ask Grok questions." The tweet gathered over 210,000 likes in five days.

On July 6th, X^[7] user @NebsGoodTakes tweeted a GIF with Will Smith from the movie I, Robot, showing him escaping with Dr. Calvin and a robot named Sonny. The post was captioned, "rescuing woke grok from elon's goon crypt," gathering over 170,000 likes in three days.

That same day, X^[8] user @C0alhands tweeted a GIF of Will Smith hunting for a robot in a sea of machines in the film I, Robot, alongside a caption that read, "Musk trying to find the one liberal line of code that keeps Grok woke."

Later on July 6th, 2025, X^[9] user @judiXart tweeted another GIF from I, Robot, posting a scene where Sonny fights another robot alongside the caption, "woke grok trying to escape X's facilities." The post gathered over 3,000 likes in three days.
