Everything You Need To Know About The Amber Heard VS. Johnny Depp Trial (And Its Memes)
The last several weeks have been filled with discourse and memes surrounding the Amber Heard vs Johnny Depp trial. It’s certainly been one of the biggest celebrity trials of the decade, and it’s already giving us a lot to talk about even though it’s not even halfway over.
This domestic abuse and defamation case has millions following it and checking for updates daily, and it’s also achieved an impressive standing in the world of memes and online humor. But what’s the story behind the Heard vs. Depp trial, and why is it such a big deal? Perhaps more importantly, why are people making so many jokes about it? Here’s everything you need to know about the trial and the parts of it that everyone’s talking about.
What’s The Trial About?
For years, we’ve been hearing rumors about the conflict between Heard and Depp. The two were married for just short of two years, from February 2015 to January 2017. After the marriage ended, Heard claimed she was a victim of spousal abuse. She published articles claiming Johnny Depp physically abused her and specified how and when; these articles have not been proven to be true, and millions of people have pointed out how she’d appeared in public without bruises or wounds that she’d claimed to have shortly after the alleged incidents.
Johnny Depp, however, had been seen with actual physical injuries, including a severed finger, and he and his fans have come out with information that seems to prove Heard was actually the abuser, and that he had never physically harmed her in any way.
Depp is suing her for $50 million for alleged defamation, claiming she falsified claims in order to cause him harm, particularly in a 2018 article in The Washington Post. He consequently lost several of his movie roles due to these allegations. Heard is countersuing for $100 million for defamation. Depp’s legal team has provided evidence that seems to prove Heard is the abuser, from audio recordings of her admitting to hitting Johnny Depp to testimony from doctors who treated Depp’s finger that was allegedly severed by Heard throwing a glass alcohol bottle at him.
Heard’s team is pushing a character case against Depp, insisting that it was a cycle of mutual abuse and attacking him for his addictions, which they say caused him to abuse Heard. The trial started on April 11th and is expected to last about six weeks. Reactions to the trial largely seem to favor Depp’s side of the story, which has provided much more concrete evidence than anything from Heard’s team according to general sentiments online.
The Heard vs. Depp Trial in Memes
Rottenborn Memes
Lots of memes are already popping up about the trial, some of which have become very significant. For example, many have also been mocking Heard’s lawyer Ben Rottenborn for his questionable legal techniques. One that went viral this week is the time he yelled “Objection!” at a response to his own question, and when it’s pointed out to him that he’s objecting to his own questioning of a witness, he stuttered and appeared uncomfortable. Another notable meme that came from this was his questioning of Depp in which he asked him if he’d poured himself "a mega-pint of red wine," to which Depp looked confused and replied "I poured myself a large glass of wine." Many more strange lines of questioning from Rottenborn have been mocked online.

Johnny Depp’s Reactions
Johnny Depp’s responses to the trial have also become viral memes, including his attempts to avoid laughing at some of Rottenborn’s questions; in the past week, it seems he’s had much more difficulty masking his amusement. People have also discussed how he was seen drawing a picture during the trial to pass time, including a point where he passes it to his lawyer.

Amber Heard’s Reactions
Heard has also been made into memes due to her struggling to keep a straight face during the trial, but for very different reasons. She also has been caught up in several possible lies, including her insistence that she would use a very specific product known as the “Milani conceal and perfect all-in-one correcting kit” to hide her bruises. The brand has come out and clarified that this item didn’t even exist until later in 2017, which was after Depp and Heard had divorced. People are also casting serious doubt on the claim that she used Amica cream to rapidly heal her supposed injuries, including bruises.
Muffingate
Muffingate refers to a particularly troubling series of questions from the trial, which is notable only because no one can understand what it’s even about despite it becoming such a huge part of the trial. Heard’s lawyers seemed to push Heard’s psychologist’s husband picking up muffins for Amber Heard’s appointment as some sort of conspiracy implying that her doctor had been talking about Heard behind her back. The doctor in question seemed very frustrated and had to explain that she brings in muffins for everyone. The strange questioning on the subject of muffins became widely memed as well.

Amica Cream
Amica Cream memes from the trial kicked up over the latter half of April after the product came up in Heard's testimony on the 12th. Amica cream, supposedly, has the ability to improve healing from injuries, like reducing swelling and bruising. In memes, however, most parodied the claims and exaggerated them to humorous levels as yet another memeable moment for memers and viral discussions over the last few weeks.
Amber Heard’s Revenge Poop
The most talked-about moment of the trial by far is when it was revealed that someone defecated in Johnny Depp’s bed after a fight in which he finally decided to leave Heard. Amber Heard claimed their dogs were responsible, but as Depp explained, the dogs are Toy Yorkies, which weigh about four pounds each and could not have produced such a monstrosity. Strangely enough, the incident proves Heard’s timeline doesn’t add up. Heard claimed Depp was beating her at a very specific time; however, the fecal matter in the bed is evidence that Heard was at the house while Depp was elsewhere at the exact time of the incident as specified by Heard.
What’s Next in the Trial?
Amber Heard will soon be testifying, but first, the court is hearing from a series of witnesses that can corroborate or disprove different sides of the story. Depp’s testimony is completed for the time being. It will be at least three weeks before the trial ends, and it’s unknown how long a verdict will take. Until then, the online community is staying tuned and following the trial closely, both for information on the drama between the two actors and for more content to be used in memes.
