Parodies of a comic known as "That Casual Misogynistic Remark" have been spreading on X, with people using the format to joke about what is could be viewed as misogynistic nowadays. Where does the meme come from and how did it go viral? Learn all about it in this brief explainer.

What Is "That Casually Misogynistic Remark" Meme?

On June 17th, 2024, webcomic artist Ashmatics posted a 10-panel comic titled "I Forgot You Were a Man." In the comic, they relayed a story of bonding with a male friend and forgetting about his gender, as "it was nice to just be kids and not have to think about much else" as they spent time together. However, in the seventh panel of the comic, the male friend makes a certain misogynistic remark, with the exact words they say blurred in the comic. The remark catches the author of the comic off-guard, with them getting "a reality check" and being angry at themselves for "getting comfortable" with the person they considered to be their friend.

In slang, talking or writing about a bothersome situation like in this comic is known as "venting," while oversharing one's negative experiences is known as "trauma dumping."

How Did 'That Casually Misogynistic Remark" Meme Go Viral?

It was mere hours after Ashmatics posted their comic when went viral on X, with many users making fun of the author over breaking off their friendship over one rude remark.

The comic, and most notably its opening panel and the "That Casually Misogynistic Remark" panel, then gained popularity as source material for edits as users imagined what the offensive remark might have been. Some used the format to joke that even the most innocuous remarks could be viewed as misogynistic nowadays.

Some went into another direction, remaking not just one panel but the entire ten-panel comic: the "I Forgot You Were Italian" version seen below achieved particular popularity.

However, not everyone appreciated making fun of someone's "vent art", as many users urged others not to make memes based on Ashmatics' comic.

What's The Blurred Text In "That Casually Misogynistic Remark" Meme?

So what's the line that's been blurred in the original comic? Several users attempted to decipher the blurred line, and with the help of others and some Photoshop user @BitchinBurner found out that the original remark in the panel likely was, "We broke up. I couldn't get her to do anything with me."

However, there's no way to verify whether the line is actually what Ashmatics' former friend said to her in real life, or even if the entire story is even true.
