Weekend Meme Roundup: E3 2021, 'Elden Ring' and Dream's 'Mask'

Welcome to the weekend roundup, where the trending memes of the past weekend are rounded up and examined more closely. This weekend was E3, which means there was a lot of exciting video-game-related content to come out, and naturally, memes. One of the biggest sources of memes from E3 was Elden Ring, a game that every Soulsbourne fan and fan adjacent is sure will redefine the meta that is action-adventure games. Also in gaming but not related, the YouTuber Dream put out a music video for his song "Mask," which was filled with material that was used to create a myriad of memes.

E3 2021

This past weekend was E3, one of the biggest events for video game announcements and corporate pandering to a "hard to define" market demographic. E3 usually has its own moments that get into memes, but this year the entire event itself, as well as specific memes from it, have been trending over the weekend, particularly the Xbox Mini Fridge.

Elden Ring

One of the biggest surprises of the E3 convention was Elden Ring having not only a gameplay trailer, but a release date. Ever since it was first announced, Elden Ring has been the subject of much speculation, for it is the combination of the Souls series director Hidetaka Miyazaki and Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. The trailer was well-received, and almost instantly there were a large number of memes made — though more reference the game finally releasing than they do the actual gameplay featured.

Dream's "Mask"

The Minecraft YouTuber Dream released a music video for his song "Mask" that he says is based on a real moment from his life. In the video, his character is seen looking at ADHD medication, labeled Normal Pills, and then throws them away. The message behind it, according to Dream, is that the pills didn't make him feel as he should and he got rid of them. Naturally, things like this were taken in different ways online by detractors and meme content makers, who quickly made memes about Dream and the "Normal Pills."
