Schitt’s Creek is a Canadian TV show about the formerly wealthy Rose family, where dysfunctional parents Moira and Johnny unexpectedly go bankrupt and are forced to move to the run-down rural town they once purchased as a joke, Schitt’s Creek. Accompanied by their spoiled adult children Alexis and David, the family must adapt to their new living situation while doing whatever possible to escape it.

Airing between 2015 and 2020, this five-time Emmy-winning sitcom was an instant favorite for the many millions who love to watch ignorant rich people suffer from the crushing weight of their own bad decisions. When a TV show becomes this popular, it’s bound to spark some memes. With a lot of existential quotes and situational comedy, Schitt’s Creek has the perfect formula for meme infamy. Here are two of the best episodes to find meme material.

In this episode, David escapes Schitt’s Creek to join the Amish. As the title implies, his family spends the episode searching for him, unaware of where he’d run off to. It’s highlighted by one particular scene in which he holds a pitchfork while standing in a field, dressed in all black like a version of the Grim Reaper you’d see in a country music video.

This scene became a meme for good reason. Often called "Amish David" or simply "David in the Field," this scene led to screenshots reminiscent of Midsommar despite being an awkward comedic moment. Watching David avoiding manual labor in the fields he’d run off to is an alienating experience we can all somehow relate to. Plus, a number of uncomfortable conversations follow with his parents, and Moira seemed more concerned about her missing purse than her son, so there’s a lot here that can be made into a meme aside from David kneeling in the grass and giving up.

Most Meme Potential: Season 1, Episode 3: "Don’t Worry, It’s His Sister"

Some of the earlier episodes of Schitt’s Creek get a bad reputation that they don’t deserve. In season one, the full conflict hasn’t been established – though we know we’ll be seeing a lot of the Rose family trying desperately to sell the town – it still feels temporary, and none of the characters have grasped the life sentence they’re now forced to endure. In this episode, Johnny is convinced he can sell the town after all … if only the locals would agree to change an unsavory road sign.

The sign in question reads, "Welcome to Schitt’s Creek, where everyone fits in," beside an image of a man and woman in an unintentionally compromising position smiling and waving at passersby. When no one is able to comprehend Johnny’s problem with the sign, they agree to edit it with another sign beside it reading simply, "Don’t Worry, It’s His Sister." This is one of the first moments in the show where Schitt’s Creek strays into very memeable territory since no one can ever pass up an opportunity to make a "Sweet Home Alabama" joke. Rest assured, there are no Deliverance banjo duels here, which is perhaps the show’s only unrealistic depiction of sketchy rural towns.
