Deltarune's first chapter came out back in late 2018, and people started discussing Kris' pronouns soon after, with some believing them to be nonbinary and others being a little more skeptical.

What Are Kris From Deltarune's Pronouns?

Kris is the shaggy-haired, silent protagonist of Deltarune, an indie RPG by Undertale creator Toby Fox. The first chapter of the game was released in 2018, and a collection of the first four chapters was released on June 5th, 2025, in tandem with the Nintendo Switch 2.

Ever since the first chapter, Kris has been referred to in the game exclusively with they/them pronouns. Toby Fox also refers to Kris by they/them pronouns in interviews and during public appearances.

This has led many Deltarune fans to assume that Kris is nonbinary and exclusively uses they/them pronouns. However, others seem to believe the use of they/them pronouns is just a tactic used by Fox to make Kris more relatable and inclusive to a broader number of players, allowing them to imagine Kris as either male, female or nonbinary.

As it stands, Fox has never officially said that Kris is nonbinary, but the interpretation that they are nonbinary is entirely feasible.

How Are Kris' Pronouns Used In Memes?

Kris' pronouns have inspired a lot of debates over the character's gender identity over the years, which came to a peak in 2021 on sites like Tumblr and the /r/Deltarune subreddit. This resulted in a lot of memes and fan art referencing both the debates and Kris' pronouns in general, with many discouraging the misgendering of Kris by using anything but they/them pronouns.

All the misgendering and debates resulting in the /r/Delatrune subreddit making an official stance in 2021, claiming that they believe that Kris is nonbinary.

Now, with the release of Deltarune: Chapters 1-4, people are making memes and debating Kris' pronouns once again, as new players use pronouns other than they/them for the protagonist.
