Okay, so I've realized some people have criticized my Ace X Vinyl ship because OctaScratch has such a strong reputation. So, I decided that Octy constantly "hangs out" with Ace and Vinyl – EHERM I MEAN – Look, a Fluttershy!

Guys, I need to ask you something.

Some time ago, I took interest in the security field. Security is something I take very seriously, especially now that crime rates are higher than ever in my neighborhood. I think my family would feel alittle safer having a trained guard living with them and I think I would be proud to have a security job.

Now, the more involved I become with preparing to enter the field, the sillier I feel about my love for pony and it's become difficult for me to get as involved with this thread as I used to.

Am I being too serious? Can you blame me given my situation? I don't know what to think right now and I'd appreciate alittle feedback (but I won't be able to respond for awhile). Thanks in advance.

I post on here even when I'm in classes. The reason is because I finish every assignment before the rest of the class gets them. The reason why is because I'm a foreigner in Britain, so I tell my doctor that it would help to get my assignments early to Skype my family. In your case, you don't have to sacrifice your time to post on here like I do, since your career seems much more important than my future one.

I'm a 26-year-old Ph.D. candidate. I devote hours upon hours of work time to logging, detailing, and planning astrometrics. I'm planning on submitting my dissertation near the end of next spring. Astronomy is serious business to me – it's a hobby that I've turned into a career.

I also watch My Little Pony, talk about it with other fans, collect the toys, and occasionally argue with people over certain aspects of the show. My current avatar on a website of people who are pretty much all younger than me… is a crossdressing pony. If some of my colleagues knew, they'd probably raise an eyebrow to any of that, but it doesn't really deter me from watching or enjoying any of it the way that I want to.

I don't think there is really a "right" response to your question – if you decide your job requires you to treat everything in your life seriously, then that's your decision. However, I will say that life outside your intended career will probably become rather dull if you go about it that way. You can be trained, and take security as a serious matter, and work with it as a career, but don't strip away things you enjoy just because it seems a little silly.

Think of the fathers that go to work in formal attire and treat their work as serious business all week… then sit down on Saturday and watch cartoons with their kids, and sit around in lounging clothes on Sunday while watching sports. They take their work seriously, but know when to relax and enjoy themselves.

You can still be interested in pony and work security, you might just tone it down a little if you feel too silly being a big fan. Or, you may just give it up altogether if you feel you don't have time for it anymore. Just remember to still enjoy yourself on occasion (on any topic), otherwise life will start to seem rather bland.

You know what, sign up Octavia in addition to Ace and Vinyl.

Yea, you are probably being too serious. Your profession is separate from your pony. There's nothing stopping you from checking pony out whenever you come back from duty and your duty isn't any less professional just because of what you do in your free time.

Because that's my own business and nobody else's

Just don't bring your pony to work and you have no reason to feel self conscious or inconfident.

Also, you shouldn't let your job take over your personality like that. You're only a security worker when you're on the job, and you never stop being all of the other things you are as well. Defining yourself completely based on the job you do just puts artificial limits on what you can be, when really it's possible for you to have several identities at once. Human beings are complicated, nuanced, and always full of contradictions – being both a security expert and a brony should be no problem.

I think you're being just a little too serious here. Just because you get a tougher job doesn't mean you need to rethink your hobbies. I mean Hell, I'm employed as a Butcher I cut up cows, pigs, lamb and all that shit, come home covered in blood smelling like raw meat but that doesn't stop my love for ponies…..if that doesn't convince you I'm currently looking into becoming a firefighter (Being a firefighter includes being in good shape, and I don't feel silly spending a good 2 hours at the gym bench pressing with every song from MLP season 1-3 on my phone). That's up to you to decide for yourself. I honestly don't see any reason why someone who wants to work security can't like ponies on their down time. Personally speaking, I am currently working on getting a Master's Degree in Library Science in order to become, you guessed it, a librarian. As a male, I'll be going into a workforce that's nearly 80% women and the stereotype for male librarians is that they're effeminate and/or gay.

However, that doesn't matter to me because I want to help people access useful, authoritative information and organize said information so they can find it easier. If you truly desire to work security and to like ponies, the stereotypes about how a person within a certain profession should act and what they should or should not be do not matter and will never matter. Just my two cents.

Don't let your job make you feel like you have to keep up a certain image in order to be respected in your field.
