I said before that I was going to see Equestria Girls in theaters, just not on opening day (because no theaters in my area are). I could see it a week after, but I might as well wait for it to come out on DVD. If I can't see it on opening day, then what's the point? The internet will be flooded with spoilers by then and those will be hard to avoid. Besides, I already know what the plot will be. Whether the movie is good or bad is all the matters. I don't care what the majority says. The only way I'll know is if I see the movie myself.

Twilight Sparkle has always been human. My Little Pony Friendship is Magic was all just a dream she had during a three year coma. When Twilight woke up, she remembers nothing except for her dream and believes she is really a pony. She thinks that the talking dog is Spike, but the dog doesn’t actually talk. It’s just a hallucination. She finds Sunset Shimmer and thinks she was the pony who stole her crown. By the end of the movie, Twilight defeats Sunset Shimmer with the power of friendship. But that’s just another hallucination. In reality, Twilight gets knocked out and goes into a coma again and goes back to the same pony dream she was having before.

It's missing the sauce.

Ha, 'a week after opening day' sounds like fun with you because even if I wanted to travel an hour or two to go see this movie I probably wouldn't be able to…..BECAUSE MY THEATERS ARE ONLY PLAYING THIS DAMN MOVIE FOR 2 DAYS EACH!!!! goddamn, the whole theater situation is rustling my jimmies more than the idea of this movie ever did (and note, I wasn't one of those extreme OMG THEY MADE THEM HUMANS! OMG THEY'RE IN HIGHSCHOOL! RUINED FOREVER! HASBRO IS TRYING TO KILL THE BRONIES! I was just that guy who was like 'Meh, I'll reserve judgment')

I regret seeing this because I will miss the spaghetti for sure…I want to find the one picture from 4chan of some guy describing what an MLP movie in theaters would be like (HE COULD SEE THE FUTUUUUURE) where it's talking about how a mother and daughter go to see the movie, only to end up in a theater surrounded by fat sweaty bronies who sing along with the theme song, couldn't hear the dialogue because the bronies would cheer after every line of dialogue……then they all start fapping at the sight of Fluttershy's ass and then they open the door and get on the floor, everybody do the dinosaur.

You causing me to envision your tight little body in a pool of marinara, noodles getting every which where, is not making this easier. Knock it off.

Stupid sexy BSoD

But yeah, that last trailer has just left me curious how this whole thing is going to unfold above all else. It looks like DHX and the writers really did their damndest to make this not suck, so I'm interested to see how well they'll be able to salvage such a shitty premise.

Who knows, we might actually end up getting something we legitimately enjoy. Wouldn't be the first time the staff managed to make lead into gold, although I highly doubt we'll be getting anything quite so excellent. I guess you can chalk me up as guardedly hopeful for copper.

You mean…like this?

Reminds me of a comic from a while back (that was actually based on a comic for Foster's Home which was in turn based on the ending of the TV show St. Elsewhere): Linked For Size

And lets not forget Cracked elaborated on the Spaghetti further and just what flavor of spaghetti we can expect.

I commented on that article and pointed out that not a single Brony I talked to was going to watch the film out of pure hatred, so Cracked's hope for seeing dump trucks of spaghetti on the film floors are dashed.

That was then…now I'm going to have to make another comment there to retract my statement.

Maybe 4chan/Cracked was right all along. There will be tomato sauce…

Okay I gotta get this shit off my chest right now.

Pinkie Pie is the worst fucking character in the show, period. She has too many flaws and not the good kind where she has to overcome some sort of turmoil in order to grow as a character but the kinda flaws that just irritate me to no end. Being “hyper” all the goddamn time, her personality which is just outright bland and her greatest fucking flaw of all: Randomness.

Her entire character can be summed up in:
>Muh Randomness

I know some people out there thinks it’s cute or whatever but… but it’s not though, it’s poor writing. There’s nothing wrong with being a little random, but she basically being random for the sake of being random.

I know my opinion is largely subjective, but come on who really believes that Pinkie Pie is best pony? I wanna know and I wanna know why.

@Video Games
I can no longer become excited for vidya games after EA/Maxis ravaged Sim City and Microsoft nuked Age of Empires.

@Equestria Girls
My pessimism toward it has dampened somewhat when I realized I've watched 15 Pokemon movies. So long as Celestia doesn't cripple my jimmies by forcing Twilight to stay in "Humana," (and Flash Sentry doesn't screw with the Twiluna shipping) I can survive the cliched and boring plot that will no doubt be a waste of seventy minutes of my life.

Now, if only /mlp/ can end their silly Civil War over mod enforcement that even got moot fed up and focus on getting this thing leaked so I can move on to season four spoilers.

@Derpy Vazquez
inb4 mod ban for spamming/flooding.

@The /mlp/ rules Vazquez linked

Oh, and >>>/mlp/rules/7 . Ponies only! No anthro. What counts as anthro? Let's refer to this chart: http://i.imgur.com/HTSAiRZ.jpg

Do not post 3. 4 is pushing it. Satyrs are not allowed. Humanized IS allowed, but it has to be fully or near-fully (4 on that chart) humanized.

Well that's a load of crock-shit right there. /mlp/ confirmed worst pony board on the internet

What the hell is wrong with ponies drawn in different shapes? What happened to artistic license? We already draw them in the form of cats, dogs, dragons, zerglings and headcrabs so why not Satyrs, Centaurs and Furries? Who's complaining about anthropomorphic cartoon horses being drawn slightly more anthro? I want ponies on any end of the anthro scale dammit! Nobody tells me what shape my ponies come in.

Posting Anthro in protest:

Also please don't post like that, Vaz

5 is cute
4 that is my fetish.jpg
3 not much of a change from 4 still hawt
2 loli version of 3 I'll have a seat over there

Also want to clarify previous post not spam…
Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it.
Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services.

Yes you can say it's flooding I had the choice of putting them all in one post which would have been long as hell or maybe I should hide it under a tag. Maybe next time I will do the latter.
Again sorry but too late to fix now.

@Alex

Keep in mind that, that scale doesn't represent anthro in all its forms. It's mostly abstract. It misses out some big ones like ponies with human bodies while retaining skull, coat and tail, though I suppose that wouldn't fit on that 1 – 5 scale because it combines 1 and 5

In fact, the whole anthro scale is pretty diverse and includes all sorts of creative combinations.

In fact theres no standards for anthro at all.

And that's good because I like art in all it's forms. I'm the kind of guy who wants to see art explore every potential and possibility. So with that in mind, how much I appreciate anthro is not based on the type and degree of anthro

Instead my taste is based on what those anthro characters are doing, how well designed they are, how the artist uses them, what sort of message the art conveys etc, etc. Thus my outrage at seeing artistic creativity censored and restricted over what I see to be a complete non-issue that art has every right to explore

So to that 1 – 5 anthro chart: I'm cool with all 5 of them. They all look well drawn. Proportionate and plausible. Twilight still looks adorable in each form in their own way. But I say that because the artist did a good job, not because of some fetish

….

Wait? Are we talking about artistic quality or which one you would rather screw? It's the latter isn't it? Bastards…give me 5 please.

More cool looking anthro:

Man, it's hard finding SFW ones.

Last edited Jun 13, 2013 at 08:56AM EDT

W-Wait are we going to discuss anthros now? I'M SO HAPPY!
@BSoD: Oh yes. It's reaaaaaally hard to find SFW anthros. I mean, take a look at Derpibooru's anthro section for a minute. Pretty much everything there is futa porn.
But not this:

Is this SFW? Probably.
@Alex: I'll choose 3 as the one I like the most. And no, there is nothing sexual implied… Heh.

@Bruno

Is this SFW?

Yeaaawellllhmmmeerrmuuuh…I'm not the best judge on that. Ask Verbose.

I'll let it pass because hot damn since it looks like you can get away with that outfit in summer

Okay I gotta get this shit off my chest right now.
Rarity is the worst-

Nevermind apparently….Well I had my first encounter with a furry a few days ago and didn't know how to describe it until now…….was not fun at all. It kinda makes me realize where some of these haters are coming from when they claim we shove our fandom down their throats…kinda opened my eyes a little bit here.

Was at the Bowling Alley with my fiance (don't ask me when I'm getting married….we literally spent maybe 2 hours in the last 5 months setting this wedding up, shut it!) celebrating our anniversary when two furries walked in, how did I know they were furries? Because they were in full fursuit the whole time, this is pretty late at the Bowling alley and we're the only ones there and out of all 15 lanes there they pick the lane Next to ours. Now, the whole time these guys are bowling they're over there making whatever noises their animals should be making (except the one guy, I'm pretty sure a cat doesn't go 'Moo' dumbass) while making very….NSFW comments towards each other (see, when I'm in public I don't go shouting "I WANT TO POUND YOUR PUSSY SO BADLY RIGHT NOW" to my fiance because you know….respect for my lady, everyone around me and myself.)

They didn't bother to talk to us, but they made sure to talk loud enough for us to hear and…..I've….never heard so many comments about dudes wanting to fuck other dudes since Fifths was making his love pillow of BSoD. At this point I was throwing gutter balls so I could get out of there as fast as I can, when we finished we returned the shoes and the guy behind the counter just said "I'm so sorry." It….was honestly one of the worst dates I've been on and now I can see where haters are coming from when they say we shove our fandoms in their faces after….well having those furries shove their shit (I HOPE I can keep saying this as a metaphor) down our throats and now I have a new outlook from here on out.

I will post ponies wherever I go Sorry, force of habit. What I meant to say is I will lower my Rainbow Dash spam……..

Starting now.

@ Kewln00b
Now don't go crazy on us… Just because some furries are acting immature doesn't give us the need to. If anything, it proves that jerks like that will be hated by the public (not necessarily all furries or bronies, just those who shove their fandoms down people's throats), and will unfortunately give their respective fandoms a bad name. I don't want that, and I'm sure many people on here agree with me. Sorry to hear about how it turned out for you, and I hope next time it turns out much better for you two.

In unrelated news… WTF happened to my wall!? Why… there's a reply button… and my wall is called comments! I like it!

You guys are all taking about NSFW and spaghetti, while I'm looking at the pages of the comic floating around where everything is awesomesauce forever:

Equestria Girls? What's that?

These charts are fun!
Pretty much with BSoD on this one; I have no automatic objections to any particular level of anthro-ness.
It all comes down to the execution.
As long as they look good, I'm totally fine with just about anything.
I will say that the #2s on these charts seem the 'weirdest' to me, but I think it's down to the fact that they are mostly naked more than anything else.
In my mind, once they get the the fully bipedal level, they start having enough 'human' that clothes feel more appropriate (assuming SFW intent, obviously).

@Kewl
See, what you ran into was not so much 'a group of furries' as 'a group of people who either don't know or don't care about societal norms or basic public consideration for others.'
Yep, some of them are furries, some of them are bronies, but some of them are obnoxious sports fans, religious recruiters, atheists, political partisans, etc, etc,etc, and some are just assholes in general.
The point is, these types of people will act like that in public regardless of the specific obsession that they have.
The content will differ but the mental state of 'I'm going to do whatever the hell I want, as loudly as I want, and everyone around me can just deal with it' is pretty much the same.

The problem that 'haters' have is that they see the assholes of a group (who are admittedly the loudest and most visible) and generalize them to slander the entire group of people who happen to share their interest.
So while you might be able to 'see where they are coming from' after having a bad experience like that, I hope you are also able to step back and realize the major flaw in their thinking and not fall into the same pitfall.
Generalized furry hate has become far too commonplace nowadays (and is probably the biggest factor behind those ridiculous /mlp/ rules that BSoD was talking about) because it's easy.
Meet one person from a group, you now know everything about that group.
Easy. Done. No more thought required.
Anything that looks like what I saw before is evil.
Taking the time to see people as individuals is much more intensive, but much less prone to insulting stereotyping and, in my personal opinion, makes the internet a much more fun place to be by allowing you to avoid throwing out the good parts of a fandom with the bad.
You might have to see more 'bad,' but for me, it balances out most of the time as I'm pretty good at ignoring stuff I don't like.

@Platus
Yes, the comics are rocking it!
(The main series at least. A couple of the minis have been a bit underwhelming for me…)
And it really looks like the writers and artists are having fun making them!

Anthros, eh?

I see 4chan is still actively hostile against any degree of furry. You'd think they'd have gotten over that already, but c'est la vie, I suppose. Buncha hypocrites, if ya ask me.

You know, I've been following the furry fandom for over a decade and I've not seen a whole lot of this much-vaunted drama and its associated bullshit. Then again, I haven't delved into it that deeply and mostly stuck around for the art, not the politics. Still, I can't help but feel that the haters be overblowing, as per usual.

Of course, there's plenty of examples of obnoxious furries (such as Kewln00b's story there) but I think we of all people should know that the outliers of the vocal minority do not speak for the silent majority. You might argue, though, that furries have the highest concentration of such people. Perhaps, perhaps. But that's a bit too simplistic for my liking. Have you ever considered that maybe it simply seems that way because the vocal minority is part of an exceptionally large group? The furry fandom is by no means a small one. But how come you rarely hear anything about them unless it's in a negative context, then? Well, let me tell you a little story…

Furries are by no means a newfangled phenomenon started by those darn kids with their hippin' and a-hoppin'. And I'm not even talking about the various instances of anthropomorphism you'll find throughout cultures both ancient and modern, though that's a factor worth considering as well. No, the beginnings of the modern fandom were in the eighties, as a minor offshoot of sci-fi and fantasy fandoms. Back in those days, the fans were mostly just a bunch of artists that took a liking to the concept of anthropomorphic animals, and applied it to their works. Of course, as with many other things, the advent of the internet brought about great growth for the fandom, and as a result, the artists became a smaller portion of the numbers.

That's, arguably, where the troubles started. In the primordial chaos of the dot-com boom, folk weren't all that careful about what they said and who was listening. So, inevitably, journalists looking for a bit of juicy scandalous behaviour heard tales of this interesting little group and went in looking for a scoop. And when you're looking for one, it tends to be easy to find one. So they released some smear articles, the nascent trolling communities got wind of things and that's when the slippery slope turned into a straight drop into the abyss. Now, the furry fandom has never had a good track record when it comes to policing itself (then again, if we're being perfectly honest here, what fandom does?) so you can imagine how well that went down. Hell, you don't even need to imagine, that's pretty much the single most well-documented aspect of the whole shebang.

So, after being the internet's buttmonkey for the better part of a decade or two, is it any wonder the sensible ones prefer to keep it under wraps? They know well enough that they won't be able to make any significant dent in the public perception, especially when the ones more eager to strut their stuff aren't helping much. Instead, they've opted to play the waiting game, as they figure the bad blood will eventually bleed off and they can try to make a good second impression. And that, boys and girls, is why you don't hear of the furries very often.

But, back to the topic at hand.

As I've said on multiple occasions, the human body is of little interest to me. It is far too commonplace and, to be perfectly honest, not very interesting in the first place. I've always felt it represents an incomplete evolutionary step as well, especially the legs and feet are quite ill-suited, no longer useful as extra hands and still a ways off from being good for stomping around. Far too rigid, yet at the same time, too soft and squishy for such. As a more personal peeve, I've always found the human face rather boring as well. Very flat and lacking in interesting features. Expressiveness is no saving grace, as it can be applied to non-human faces fairly easily.

So, on that chart, number three is most to my liking. It gets rid of many flaws and makes things much more interesting. Numbers four and two stray too close to their respective extremes and therefore lack any significant differences, which makes them fell rather arbitrary. The two extremes are, of course, the basic models so there's not much to elaborate upon.

Speaking of anthro art, I've been doing some more of it. Again, it isn't pony related, but since we're discussing it, I might as well subject you lot to the horrors I've created yet again:

Wanna know why the ponies have more stylized, human-like faces? Take a look up there, that's why. It's difficult to make a horse's face look good, let me tell ya. I even had reference and everything, still looks shitty.

Since the dead-center front of the face proved especially difficult, I decided to try approaching the problem from a different angle instead (har har). The body I just sort of tacked on as an afterthought, so it kind of sucks. Still, got a bit of practice on doing hands, can't go wrong with that.

I figured I've done enough simple stuff so I decided to try something more complicated, like aggressive combat poses. I like how it turned out. A bit more static than intended, but still, not bad for a first try. Ye cannae go wrong with a highlander and a big claymore, laddie!

You guys should check out this documentary I like the explanations the narrator provides and I also love the intro.
This is only part 1 of the documentary of course.

So, you guys know that supergroup The Legacy Armada from my fanfic Element Seven? I guess I'd show you guys the lineups. Josh Larson, the founder of the Armada, is lead vocalist and (in some songs) rhythm guitarist in all "formations", as they are called.

-

STANDARD FORMATION: This was the first ever formation to perform a concert (Poughkeepsie, NY, 12/29/11), which is how it got the name.

Applejack/AJ Sanders: Lead guitar, backing vocals.

Twilight Sparkle: Drums, percussion.

Rainbow Dash: Bass, backing vocals.

Vinyl Scratch: Turntables, samples. (Only if required.)

-

ALTERNATE FORMATION: Similar to the Standard Formation, the Alternate Formation got it's name from being the second formation to perform a concert.

Pinkie Pie: Lead guitar, backing vocals.

Fluttershy: Drums, percussion.

Rarity: Bass, backing vocals.

Vinyl Scratch: Turntables, samples. (Only if required.)

-

ROYAL FORMATION: Founded in February 2012, this formation involves the original three princesses. They have yet to perform a song involving turntables as of June 2013.

Princess Celestia: Lead guitar, backing vocals.

Princess Luna: Drums, percussion.

Princess Cadance: Bass, backing vocals.

-

HARDCORE FORMATION: The members of this formation, formed in April 2012, share one thing in common: a love of hardcore wrestling. (In my headcanon, Magic Duel took place in January 2012.)

Gilda: Lead guitar, backing vocals.

Trixie: Drums, percussion.

Vinyl Scratch: Bass, backing vocals.

Pinkie Pie: Turntables, samples. (Only if needed.)

-

TUMBLR FORMATION: The most recent formation, founded in December 2012, was the result of interdimensional travel. It involves the characters from the Ask Human Appledash Tumblr.

Angie Rivers (Applejack): Lead guitar, backing vocals.

Patrica Jackson (Pinkie Pie): Drums, percussion.

Alison Cruz (Rainbow Dash): Bass, backing vocals.

Vinyl Scratch: Turntables, percussion. (Only if needed.)

So did any of ya bronies see THIS?!

You know what those are? Flash Puppets….not just any flash puppets, they're the ones DHX uses and they were leaked onto the internet by 4chan.

All I can say is this is cool (having your own puppets that none other than the creators themselves used to make this show) but this can ONLY end badly when the people at Hasbro/DHX see this.

@Brownmane

Ah, you're crazy dude, humans are beautiful. You call the human form plain and boring compared to other members of the animal kingdon, but the human body doesn't need garrish things like bright plumage or goofy ears to be interesting. Just look.

This sculpture might first appear to be a figure at rest, but the nuance of the naked human body allows us to observe points of tension mixed with the points of rest (Observe the tension on his right hand, suggesting he's really leaning on that fucker. Observe the suspension of the left arm, suggesting that he's actually raising it slightly as opposed to just letting it fall as it will) Concerning the face, just look at how the subtle interplay of light and shadow gives it a WORLD of expressive nuance even though we can only vaguely make out the actual facial features.

If this sculpture were made using a medium less adept than the human body, we might mistakenly believe that the figure is bored, or he's thinking what he wants for lunch, but no! We can tell that that he is pondering nothing less than the deepest mysteries of existence right now. No, I must disagree with you and your artistic misanthropy. There is no subject in the whole animal kingdom with the same elegance or expressive capability as the human body.

@Kewln00b

Yeah, I've had to listen to Exudes bitch for the past few days about how all the shit-tier animators are going to have better builds than he does.

@Anthropomorphism chart

I don't like three and four. Good examples of that weird uncanny valley vibe I get from most anthro stuff. I do like two however, especially the Dash version. Very cute.

True, but only from a human perspective.

We humans have this nasty habit of anthropocentrism, i.e. not giving two shits about anything other than our own supposed greatness. Given that I have a marked distaste for arrogance and hubris, I find this particular habit more aggravating than I can articulate.

Nearly all of the praise you heap on that particular lump of bronze could easily be attributed to any other like it, non-human included. But, how often do you find an artist who puts as much effort into his non-human sculptures as his human ones? More importantly, how often do you find a critic who bothers to notice?

So did any of ya bronies see THIS?!

You know what those are? Flash Puppets….not just any flash puppets, they're the ones DHX uses and they were leaked onto the internet by 4chan.

All I can say is this is cool (having your own puppets that none other than the creators themselves used to make this show) but this can ONLY end badly when the people at Hasbro/DHX see this.

So, this would be a "behind-the-scenes", I guess? You know, I've always been into that stuff, and this looks pretty cool.

Anyway, we haven't had a scenario in quite a while. Here, check this: your OC (and anypony close to them, if you want) finds a Rule 63 ray gun that can turn them into another gender. What do they do?

Here's my scenario: Ace and Vinyl use the ray gun on each other one night, and… well, you get it. Afterwards, Vinyl turns herself back into a girl, but the gun breaks, leaving Ace as a female. They explain to Twilight about the incident, and they end up going on a dangerous journey to North Korea to fix the ray gun.

No, it's not a behind the scenes thing like you're thinking this is so let me explain a bit, someone was able to get the ACTUAL puppets they used to animate Wonderbolts Academy…..and leaked them onto the internet so now ANYONE can use said puppets and do whatever the fuck they want with them which could include making your own fan videos and episode using DHX's resources which could result in…..Well, let's just hope no one gets sued over this.

Huh, what does Kewln00b Poni [Name Pending] do with a Rule 63 gun? Well, turn himself into a mare and play with his new crotchtits. Then get bored, turn himself back into a stallion and probably go paintballing.

It would be interesting to see how cryiak would animate them.

Hey. Hey guys. Look dis:

I know, I know it's really long, but:

"The Brony Chronicles is a three part documentary series that explores the world of My Little Pony and Bronies from various points of view. Part 1 focuses around the origins of the My Little Pony franchise, the creation of Generation 4 and the rise of the Brony fandom. Part two and three are still being developed and will be released later on this year.

After a year of production and collaboration with a talented and dedicated team, we hope that you all will appreciate our hard work and will be able to walk away having learned something new about My Little Pony and Bronies. Enjoy!

~Saberspark, Paleo and The Brony Chronicles team"

I'm thoroughly impressed with this documentary so far. It's presented in a pretty even-handed way that doesn't flinch, and it's got some extremely great production values. I have to say that, in my personal opinion, this documentary is quite a bit better than the BronyCon documentary when it comes to illustrating the origins of the fandom and their various aspects. Much more thorough. I particularly appreciate their representation of different perspectives, including the early criticisms and negative articles. Huge props to them for chronicling the history on 4chan, including the great purge/ban. They detailed those events in a pretty level way, including representing the conflict pretty objectively. A lot of people, fans included, aren't familiar with those details, so it's neat to have them documented.

Why stop at Fifths?

Yeah, it does kind of piss me off that suddenly the fandom is full of god-tier animators. Maybe I'm being a bit pretentious and privileged here (read: yes, I am), or maybe I'm just trying to cover my ass for my own shortcomings (read: maybe), but there is nothing I despise more than people who strive for "show quality" in their animation, save the people who complain about animations not being "show quality." In my mind, making your animations "show quality," or otherwise trying to emulate the show as much as possible, is like a spontaneous reference to an Internet joke in Family Guy: the shallowest way possible to appeal to an audience.

Yes, my builds look somewhat like the show's. Yes, I traced some of the manes and tails and cutie marks and such. But I like that they don't look the exact same (fig. 1).

Fig. 1: A DHX Raindrops build alongside my own Vinyl build (I wanted to have one of my Pegasi instead of a Unicorn to compare wings, as well as my Dash mane and tail vs. theirs, but Flash crashed. Trust me when I say they look different.)

They're unique, and they wouldn't be confused for those of anyone else's. However, this is a comment I received on that Heartbreaker animation I made a while ago:

"Why is Rainbow's mane so short? It's actually fairly long in the show."

That's it. That's all they said. No constructive criticism, no compliments or complains, just telling me that my animation would be better if Rainbow's mane didn't look slightly different from the show. The fandom holds "show quality" in such high esteem that it becomes trivial, and as a result, people are left with the impression that the quality of the builds is the most damn important thing in animation. The people I saw in the /mlp/ thread where the builds were leaked were going off to learn animation simply because they had some builds and were saved the trouble of making their own, not because they had any overwhelming desire to animate.

But it's also a more personal issue. Builds are designed, drawn and used by another person, not some big factory that churns out Flash models. It's pretty selfish to take their builds, animate some crap and claim it as "show quality." Builds belong to someone, and in that respect, they're similar to, say, music: made by an artist and presented to the public for the public's enjoyment. In some ways, you could say that animating using someone else's builds is like remixing a song, but it differs. When someone makes a remix, they usually put their own spin on the song, like adding heavy bass and screwing with the order of the lyrics and whatnot. When you animate using someone else's Flash builds, it's because you're trying to copy them exactly. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but if I suddenly stumbled across another animator using my builds without permission, I'd be pissed. It's laziness. Someone is too lazy to draw their own builds, to inject any sort of style or personality, and settles for just bumming off someone else's work. The end result usually turns out pretty bad, since Flash builds tend to be difficult to use for everyone besides those who made them.

So it annoys me that people make no attempt at creating something unique. When everyone is using the same program to animate the same colorful ponies, the Flash builds are essentially where the lines of style are drawn. There's none of that when people use the DHX builds, and that makes me sad. Builds are designed to be animated a certain way, and it's difficult to break from that. When people use the DHX builds, they all end up animating in more or less the same style, with varying degrees of success.

End rant. I will confess to being somewhat passionate about this.

In other news, yo boi Exudes got himself a tablet. You have moderate reason to be afraid.

Shut the hell up. It's harder than it looks.

@Exudes

…What are these Builds you speak of?

Are they important?

Is that Why I've never made a good animation? Cause I don't use them?

(Although the more likely reason Is that I have no sense of time or movement besides non linear chronology.)

@ Leaked Flash Animations
This will end badly, but ehh, fuck the police!

@Bionicle the Brony Lurker

Da fuq did I watch?

@Anthrothingdiscussioncrapthingy

I like the human, pony and model 2. The others are either too creepy or just plain far fetched in my terms.

@Flash puppets: I think I'm pretty much on Exudes' side with this one (pretentious artist mode, activate!) I don't really mind that much when people try to make their animations "show quality" (as Exudes pointed out, imitation is the greatest form of flattery) because the people make their own builds, and so there is still that little bit of "them" left in the animation. Animations like Snowdrop or Double Rainboom tried their damndest to make their animations look like they came right out of the show, with varying degrees of success, and came out with an animation that, while looking a whole lot like the show, still had a little bit of the creator's own personal style in there. I can tell from a mile away when an animation is done by Exudes, because he does ponies with his own personal touches. Now the only way you can tell an amateur animator from a master one is not by how the models look, but how clunky and/or smooth the animation itself is, and that's not entirely ok with me. I wasn't all too bothered by this whole thing until I saw images and gifs in the pony gallery of people giving their own animation samples with the puppets that I realized how much blatant ripping off this whole thing is doing.

I could start a whole rant about how this is similar to the pony OC generator, and to an extent similar to vector editing trends like IWTCIRD and the pony shrug, and how this affects me as an artist. But after spending about a half hour typing a paragraph like that I decided I didn't wanna be that pretentious and whiny tonight and decided to leave it at that.

In the end, you can't stop the internet from leaking just about everything. And with how DHX and Hasbro have been dealing with copyright lately it's hard to tell if they will leave this be or start handing out the lawsuits.

Congrats on the new tablet, by the way, Exudes. It truly is a bitch learning to draw on a tablet after so many years of drawing traditionally. It almost feels like learning to draw all over again.

@kewlnoob's bowling alley story

Shit man, I know I wouldn't have handled that as well as you did.

Thanks man, if it makes you feel any better I sold the film rights to this story to Michael Bay, I hear Danny Trejo is in talks to portray me so….take that as you will.

@Flash Puppets

…I Say Don't bother with the things…

On one hand, you use them and everyone will notice those little twitchy bits in your animation that happen because you're an amateur. Because everyone knows what they look like.

On the other hand, it takes too long to make your own.

Solution?

Don't use puppets! Hand draw every single panel!

…Like I'm doing right now just to prove to myself I could animate If I wanted to…

(It's pretty much just a sketchy, ponified version of a Fire Emblem Animation right now. Which is hell when you're working with four legs instead of Two. And I also think it looks horrible… But that could just be me being pessimistic.)
