Ok I am not the only one cool.
Hehe.
I had an avatar of Vivian from the Paper Mario games on the old Nintendo forums, and everyone thought I was a chick.
So yeah, people tend to associate avatars with gender.

i used to go by s.h.o.d.a.n. on many sites(stood for Sentient Hyper Optimized Data Access Network). then it struck me shodan has a girl computer(like glados)
i think it was fairly understandable misstake especially with all the anime i watch

I once had an avatar of Hansi Kürsch on one site. Everyone thought that the picture was of me. To be fair, Hansi really does look like a guy you'd run into on the internet.
I don't associate avatars with anyone's appearance or attributes, mostly because I don't really process what I'm seeing when I look at an image, and if I do, I don't overanalyze it. Also, not all anime characters are female.

@Shadowfury
Your right not all of them are girls after all..
Mine is only a female anime character, because it's my own art work, and that's mainly what I draw!
@Grillist:
You do know, that in the Japanese version, Vivian is a guy.
