Entry Writing Tips For New Users

Just some helpful tips for new users planning to write an entry. (Some old users could benefit from this, too.)

1. Make sure it is not already been submitted. Search for it.

2. Use proper grammar and spelling. Not 1337 speak or anything like that.

3. Avoid bias or writing in the first person.

4. Use proper formatting.

5. Make sure to include where the meme originated and how it spread.

6. Make sure what you are submitting is actually a meme. KYM is not a place to make or promote memes. That is called forcing a meme. We will know if you try that.

7. Keep things (relatively) SFW.

8. If you need help, ask for it. The Meme Research section of the forums is a good resource.

9. To many videos or images can make an entry seem cluttered. Keep it simple.

10. Although KYM does document international memes, please try to write entries in English.

11. If you don't know a vital piece of information, say that it is unknown. Do not make something up.

12. +1 confirm does nothing. Articles will be confirmed by the admins when they are good and complete. The better your work and research, the faster a confirm will come!

13. Haters gonna hate. You will probably have tons of people saying things like "+1 Deadpool", "Not a Meme you idiot", or "GTFO newfag". Ignore them.

Good Luck!

Nice list, Watcher. This would definitely be helpful for the new users in terms of article making.

We also have a somewhat similar list in the KYM FAQ under the question, "How can I write a meme entry that will be confirmed fast?". There are a few ones not listed here on there that I'll copypasta here.

- Cite your sources! Since every statement must be fact-checked, providing a link to where your information was obtained is required.
- You are allowed to add photos to any article, even if it isn’t yours. Adding pictures to submitted entries may help get the article confirmed. Please only submit “found” photos to memes in submissions. Do not create images for the purpose of having an entry confirmed.
- Submitting your own images to Confirmed memes is okay.
- Do not plagiarize other articles. Although there are other sources that do a great job of explaining a meme, quote brief excerpts where necessary rather than simply copying and pasting.
- When appropriate, provide metrics such as Google Insights, Trendistic graphs, YouTube Stats, and/or other data.
- Direct links to Wikipedia, YTMND Wiki, Encyclopedia Dramatica, and Macrochan are provided. Use them!
- If the meme is present in other forms of media such as TV and film, make the distinction between whether the meme is mainstream-sourced, or mainstream-derived. Pop culture can be remixed online and sometimes qualify as an Internet meme, but if the derivatives were being created by other mainstream sources at the same time, then the meme has more to do with general pop culture than Internet culture.
