I'm not so sure if this should be discussed about in the "General" section, because of it being a video game series, or the "Meme Research" section, because it is also a meme that created more memes, but anyway, let's begin.

It all started when I created this thread in the Third Party Games board at the Nintendo Database (NinDB) forum. I understand that the poll looks awful:

I've decided to create this topic and invite those at NinDB to discuss about whether Touhou Project is popular or not.

Well, it's popular… I don't see WHY… but it is.

Indeed, there are huge amounts of Touhou's information and fanfics on the internet. But, if you confirm its popularity by these quantity, you are wrong.

Many Japanese don't know even the existence of Touhou (original game and fanfics) at all. Its popularity is kept by only otaku. Of course, all Japanese isn't otaku.

We never say that Touhou is popular in nationwide.

Touhou is very popular, including the fact its one of MILLION Doujin-style anime shooters games, PLUS its made by a not-so-well-known man in japan.
including these facts, its very well known of it's kind.
it spawned many memes and such, so yeah its popular.
