From the very beginning of the mission there were fears that if Earth lost control of it, it could have become a hazard to Saturn's moons, a couple of which are candidates for methane-based life.

Early this morning its mission team plunged it into Saturn, causing it to burn up in the atmosphere. It continued sending data until it disintegrated.

A particular recording from the probe dated July 25, 2004 and the successful landing of Huygens on Titan were what struck my interests in the celestial heavens. Now that Cassini is gone, the shell of Huygens is all that remains.

The final image taken by Cassini (in both monochrome and natural color) before her descent into Saturn.

I always had a particular liking for Cassini. And I knew that the Cassini mission was going to end in this way eventually (all space probes orbited gas giants in the past met the same fate), but it's still a shame that it had to happen in my opinion. Oh well.
