Kevin Spacey accused of making a "sexual advance" on actor Anthony Rapp back in 1986. Spacey apologizes and comes out as gay

So Anthony Rapp claims that Kevin Spacey made sexual advances on him when Rapp as still 14.

Spacey apologizes, saying he doesn't remember the time and if it's true, he was probably drunk. Then he proceeds to come out with his sexuality, shown below

I felt it appropriate to generate a discussion on this, given the Harvey Weinstein situation. There are things I'm shaky on with this, however.

On Rapp's side, it's great that he spoke out about this situation but why hold off on providing the name for 30 years? It's not that it makes the situation suspicious given the amount of time, but unfortunately it's way past the statute of limitations so I doubt charges can be pressed on Spacey for this.

As for Spacey, I admire that he apologized but what he said after the apology is also quite horribly timed. He doesn't remember it and if it's true, he was probably drunk. The incident was 30 years ago so it's understandable he can't remember things that far back--but, being drunk can affect your memory. And the other stinger in this is he came out as being gay. Sorry, but sexuality has nothing to do with making advances like that on someone.

Again, I'm not defending anyone in this, I'm just trying to analyze the situation. What are your guys thoughts on this?

Netflix has canceled House of Cards.

…why hold off on providing the name for 30 years?

Same reason Weinstein got away with it for 30 years--you don't want to fuck up your career, so you accept Hollywood (or in this case Broadway) has its dark underbelly and move on. I'll be curious to know if these leads to more allegations like Weinstein's did.

…and if it’s true, he was probably drunk.

Drunk or not, trying to have sex with a fourteen year old is really, really creepy.

I think it's pretty horrible and disgusting that Spacey would come out as gay now. This is mighty convenient for the shithead, as it allows him to use gayness as a shield, but unfortunately it strengthens the old notion perpetuated by homophobe scum that gay = paedo.

He has conflated two very different sexual issues and needs to be condemned not only for his crimes against minors but enabling conflation between LGBT rights and paedophilia.

Absolutely gut-churning and awful. Spacey disgusts me with how he has responded to this.

I know I'm kinda late to chime in on this, but I don't think going after 14 year olds is that weird. Fact is most of the senior women I know got married around that age. Hell, my grandmother got married to my grandfather when she was 14 and he was 22 and nobody thought it was weird.

Maybe it's because I'm not american and age of consent is 14 where I live, but I always found this "she has to be over 18!!!" mentality funny.

Will 2018 be the year where actors we liked will start killing people?

The mentality is that 14 year olds are too young to be making sexual/relationship decisions on their own (which I believe is true). If a man in his 20s is going out with a 14-15 year old girl, even if the girl is "consenting", it's hard to see it as a mutual relationship as one is a naïve kid and the other is an adult.
I tutor kids in middle school part time and they don't know shit about life (neither did I when I was their age). Then you get this Kevin Spacey case which would probably still be considered sexual assault even if the dude was older than 14.

If I remember correctly, the age of consent being 18 in America is related to physical, emotional and mental harm pregnancy can give to a young female. I'd also have a guess that this translates to homosexual relationships too since it's only now being tolerated and was unthinkable/a crime when the law was made.

That's pretty weird considering ages 15-20 is the healthiest time for a woman to have a baby.

So apparently shit is going down in Hollywood right now hardcore. There's multiple actors currently being accused by ex-child stars of "inappropriate"… Okay no beating around the bush, ex-child actors are saying that when they were kids they were approached by actors in exchange for their roles.

Given how the then adult actors being accused have nothing to do with each other and most of them have never even worked with the other accused there's a pretty good chance this isn't bullshit. If it was like one or two actors who were buddies that were getting accused you could argue it was a smear campaign, but given how there's dozens of actors being accused and said actors have gotten in legal trouble in the past for sexual harassment and such… yeah

The police are currently collecting enough testimony to justify arrest warrants on MULTIPLE actors.
"It still could be a smear campaign"
If ninety women who have never talked to each other ever in their lives say that one person raped each of them… yeah probability is pretty high that actor is a piece of shit.

OH SHIT! Apparently the reason why one of these people that the police are working on getting a arrest warrant is they have video recording inside the hotel room of the actor threatening a female with a gun.

"Well if they have video evidence why haven't they arrested them yet?"
Considering the seriousness of these allegations and we're potentially talking about dozens of actors here chances are the police are trying to make sure when they do arrest people the rest of these fucks aren't going to get out of the country. If they arrest them one by one chances are most of them will flee the country before you get a arrest warrant.
