The Nerd Thread

Just post things that you do or have done that makes you a nerd. Everyone is a nerd in their own way. How about you? (Saying you're a brony doesn't count because half of the people here are bronies)

I actually own an Ocarina of Time (not the game, the flute), I've read just almost all of the Zelda manga out there, all of my avatars have to do with Scott Pilgrim, I still have all of my Pokemon cards from when I was a kid in a special picture frame so they don't get ruined, I still own my Buzz Lightyear from my childhood, and I'm a Zelda fanboy to the point where I've learned several Zelda songs and have posted one onto youtube.

Your move.

Edit: I almost forgot that I found a program and started to edit Ocarina of Time but the program sucked. I wanted to remaster the whole game…

I have a certain extent of Tech knowledge(considering I'm 14 and helped my mother get rid of a bug which prevents her from opening any program or file). I also use a spreadsheet on my phone.

I know some shit about registries and stuff.

Okay.

I majored in math in college (because I wanted an easy major).
I know seven computer languages.
I've gone to Comic-con five times.
I named my cellphone R2-Q5.
I kick ass in trivia games to the point where many people don't want to play against me.
I forget people's names, but I remember phone numbers by memorizing their prime factors.
My favorite pastime is solving crosswords.
My IQ qualifies me to be a member of Mensa.

Does studying quantum mechanics and philosophy just for fun count? I think it sorta counts as nerdy.

Pfft, as if you're the only one. I take out a book on string theory for a bit of "light" reading.

Hm, lets see. I remove all my own viruses, I've personally modded pretty much any game I spent more than an hour playing, and every single one of my avatars is Osaka. I also have no friends outside of the internet, and stay indoors so much that my skin has no tan whatsoever. Its so pale that its almost blue.

I don't know how you describe them, but that's a nerd in my book.

Impressive. Most impressive.

I probably classify as "Geek" categorized under the subspecies of "Otaku".

I also have a Ocarina of Time, a Replica Master Sword, a Hylian Sheild, and a home made Link Cosplay. (Im not as good as these chicks, but you get the idea.)

I have a mountain of Manga, including Death Note, Higurashi, Fullmetal Alchemist, Legend of Zelda, Luna, Bleach, Tsubasa, Hetalia, Negima, and a few others. All topped with an Edward Elric keychain and an action figure of Saber from Fate Stay Night. (AKA, that one anime where people die when they are killed)

I would name off my video game collection, but I honestly don't want to go look at all the titles. It has Okami in it, that is all that matters.

I am good with Computers, and have made video games in the past (even though those where just simple shooters and dungeon crawlers).

I started learning Japanese just so I could go to Japan one day.

Hell, if I am not a geek, then I don't know what one is.

I have at least ten reference books on Star Wars and have all the films on DVD (of course, who doesn't).

I've seen every episode of Star Trek; The Next Generation, and I'm currently watching Voyager all the way through. I've also seen every movie, and I own a collection of blueprints for the original Enterprise passed down from my dad.

I have a ton of Pokemon games, not just the RPGs. I also have all my old cards in a 2-inch binder, including 2 Ancient Mew cards from the first movie.

My bookshelf consists of several collections, including National Geographic and Game Informer.

I have three cases full of Lego.

I have played almost every NES Game to date. Beat almost every Zelda game known to man. (I refuse to play the CDI Zelda.) I know more about the history of Nintendo than any of my friends. I am somehow the best sword fighter out of my friends, even though I barely use nerf swords. I did a bit of LARPing. A good bit of songs on my computer is from video games or movies. I know all of the video game and movie references in Scott Pilgrim. I know every single matchup of Deadliest Warrior, who won, and how much they won by.

Thinkgeek is my main source of posters, replicas and other crap.
Also I have my comp filled with old school games, I play WoW and I think ALL of the CoD series suck.

I still play Pokemon and Final Fantasy furiously on my DS.
Even at Military School.
I can explain most legal jargon to anyone.
Mainly because I study a lot. But I also have watched SOOOO MUCH Law & Order.
Law nerd might apply here better.
I also can't throw away/ trade a video game. I have only done it in DIRE circumstances.

Reasons I am a proud nerd (aka geek, technophile):

1. Prefers listing rather than prosing

2. Love videogames. Owned these consoles:
- Atari 2600 (broken, MIA)
- NES
- Famicom (sort of broken)
- SNES
- N64
- Gamecube
- Playstation
- Playstation 2
- Playstation 3
- Game boy (grey brick)
- Game boy color
- Game boy advance (1st model)
- Nintendo DS (graphite, 1st model)
- Nintendo DS Lite

2.1 Played and finished Final Fantasy I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, and XII.

3. Love animu and mango. List of what I have seen and read would become tl;dr.

4. Engineering grad

5. Assembled my own computer. Not a super high end, but does its job pretty damn well. Specs:
- Intel i5 Quad Core 2.8 Ghz
- Powercolor HD Radeon 6850 Graphics Card
- 500 GB HDD
- 4 GB RAM
- CoolerMaster 500W PSU

5. Read Wikipedia every day.

6. Almost no TV watching. If I do, I watch Discovery channel or the food network.

7. Prefer playing VGs than going to parties.

8. Hang in KYM

Nerds FTW.

- I know more about programming concepts than anybody else I currently know. (Doesn't make me good at programming, though.)

- I also have more older consoles than anyone I know.

- I waste time on the computer like it's nobodies business.

- I was the only person who got 100 on my computer class's final.

- One of the few people to own a Virtual Boy and actually know what it is.

- I own TV shows on DVD no one else would ever dare to own. (The Super Mario Bros 3 cartoon, Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, etc.)

- I know everything about one show that nobody else knows anything about (I guess that makes me more of a hipster, though.)

- I try to get unimportant objects over the internet, no matter how stupid the purchase may be. (For example, I almost ordered a portable printer, and a mouse with a calculator built in.)

… About all I can think of.

Where the hell do you people find money to buy those things?

Anyway, I still own about half of my SNES games. The other half, along with the console suddenly disappeared one day. The funny thing is that Earthbound was in the console when it disappeared, yet I still have it.

Also I have a list of all the anime I've watched, and it's up to date.

I'm a Comp Sci Major.
I have a shelf full of D20 books, and I can tell you which book a feat is in if it is in any of those books.
I have my own set of "special" dice.
I wear a fez on a semi regular basis, and have a pretty good 11th doctor costume complete with sonic, even though Pertwee is my favorite doctor.
I own an NES which I still play (I'm working on speedrunning SMB), and an SNES that's currently dormant.
I used to do fencing and archery.
When I was much much younger I took up gymnastics because I wanted to learn to backflip like Link.
I go to conventions.
I got a capture card specifically because I wanted to make machinima and LPs.
Much of my free time now is spent watching anime, LPs, or old Sci Fi.
I've got probably around 1 cubic metre of Legos.
The vast majority of what is on my computer's hard drive is video games.
There is a Lot of Joss Whedon here, let me tell you. I've even got a Blue Sun shirt, although I lack a Jayne hat.
Homeschooled. And not the crazy religious kind either, but the kind where I was bored by how slow school was going so I decided to do it my own way.
Growing up, my favorite movie was The Empire Strikes Back.

@Ogreenworld

Impressive list !

How about some "golden age anime", like Doraemon, Mazinger Z, Gatchaman, Ashita no Joe, Galaxy Express 999, Gegege no Kitaro, Kinnikuman, Hokuto no Ken, Tetsuwan Atom, Yatterman, and Ghibli classics? Some of them are my true favorites.

I guess the only thing nerdy about me is I like gaming and internet culture? I don't really think I'm a nerd. Maybe a closet nerd? Idk, no one I know IRL knows anything about the internet (especially not what an internet meme is). All they know is facebook and small stuff. KYM is the only forum I use. I guess its my double life. ^^

@Ardent Gamer:

I wear a fez on a semi regular basis, and have a pretty good 11th doctor costume complete with sonic, even though Pertwee is my favorite doctor.

Pertwee is my favorite, too. I was just talking on the phone with a friend of mine yesterday who was lamenting that nobody seems to know classic Dr. Who.

@OGW & Hiroman
My list? Get ready to be impressed…

Akira
Pokemon (about ten episodes of the first series)

I do own a DVD of classic "Popeye" cartoons, though. One of my hobbies is studying and collecting classic newspaper comic strips. In college, I took a class on the history of Comics from Art Spiegelman, and I knew more about "Thimble Theater" and "Pogo" than he did.

Last edited Aug 04, 2011 at 02:02AM EDT

1. I own all three seasons of Avatar; The Last Airbender on DVD, and can name every episode in chronological order.
2. I play Dungeons & Dragons every Saturday via Skype. Last week I finished DM'ing a version of D&D called Sidewinder, that takes place in the wild west. My party successfully escorted the notorious outlaw known as Big Iron through the Indian Territory and into Arkansas, where he was executed for the assassination of the Lieutenant Governor. And NO ONE died of dysentery.
3. Last semester, I watched all the LOTR trilogy films (extended versions, I might add) in one sitting, though everyone watching was really just waiting for the part in The Return of the King when Denethor eats a tomato.

So I'm not that big of a nerd, but I try. I really do.

I'm probably definitely not the biggest nerd here, but here goes…

1) I'm pretty much the only person I know in real life who likes anime. My list is not nearly as impressive as some of these, but I've seen pretty much all of One Piece, Naruto, Fairy Tail, Death Note, Sgt. Frog (or whatever it's called in Japan), Bleach, and of course childhood favorites like dragonball z, pokemon, and yu-gi-oh.

2) Most kids my age watch reality shows or dramas or tosh.0 or something, but I prefer cartoons, as in regular show, adventure time, MLP, old spongebob, avatar the last airbender, and old favorites like invader zim and rockos modern life.

3) I'm nearly an adult and I've had 2 girlfriends but no first kiss.

4) I'm the only person I know who likes heavy metal. REAL heavy metal that is, not just linkin park or korn or whatever, I prefer bands such as:
Blind guardian, iron maiden, children of bodom, ensiferum, black sabbath (both ozzy and dio era), megadeth, iced earth, slayer, kalmah, finntroll, alestorm, electric wizard, ronny james dio, to name a few.

5) I'd rather spend my time on the internet than anything else, which is why I'm on a KYM forum at 2 in the morning.

6) I love video games that are meant for little kids like mario and kirby.

I'M A NERD AND PROUD OF IT! Although I'm more of a geek really. See, only a geek would care about the difference :P

Great run, those early Popeye appearances. Just last year, I got a book with reprints of about two years of Thimble Theater that covered this story line. Popeye wants to know where the rest of the crew is, and Castor Oyl tells him that he's the whole crew: think of the prestige, he'll be doing the work of twenty men! Popeye thinks about it and agrees…so long as he gets the pay of twenty men. Hilarity ensues.

Here's my nerdiness.

1. I spend basically every moment of every day for the past 3 years making videos for the old rpg Battletech using 3d animation. This means I am either working on a scene or the computer is in the process of rendering it for me.

2. When I watched my first anime, Soul Eater, last year I stayed up for 2 days to watch all 51 episodes without stopping.

3. Most of the games I play are from the 90s and I worship them like gods. I spend years trying out emulators and compatibility in order to run ancient 1995 and older games.

4. I watch/read nothing but scifi.

In terms of intelligence, I'm just a bit above average. I study whatever it is that I happen to fancy at a given time. Lately I've been teaching myself how to build flash websites and flash games.

But I'm more of a geek than a nerd.

-I fancy myself a character from a video game for starters.

-I still play Pokemon. I own nearly every game released outside of Japan.
-I've watched nearly every episode of Doctor Who, including classic.
-I've never gotten laid.
-Spend about/over 50 hours on the computer every week. When I'm at work I still get on the internet through my phone.
-I use internet memes in real life, leaving others confused and lost to their meanings and origins.
-I make references to the sci-fi genre on a daily basis. I celebrate Towel Day every year.
-I sneak references to popular culture in my serious artwork. Mostly from video games.
-D&D Tuesdays.
-My alarm on my phone is a recording of the announcer in Portal 2 informing me that I've been asleep for 99999999999999
-I'm playing Pokemon right now. EV training my Tynamo, Lady Gaga, who has outstanding IVs and a Naughty nature.
-You remind me of the babe.
-I just lost the game.

My classmates call me a genius. Even though I suck at math, I'm better with science.

-I'm in love with Doctor Who, I can't get enough and I love ANY photo or reference, in fact I even met my guy friend by tapping out the drumbeat the Master went insane to. And I go to the LA Doctor Who convention every year. Plus I'm building a cardboard Dalek with my dad.
-I love the internet.
-Brony
-My friends are a whole bunch of nerds and geeks at least two years older than me.
-My friends and I have "Wacky Wednesday"
-When "Nerd Day" came up in spirit week in my school, I had a blast and could comprehend the fun I had
-I love Portal, and I even dressed up as GLaDOS
-Colouring books are a way I relive stress

I'm sort of awesome at Science, Tech, and Math. "Typical Asian," my friends said.
I have also mastered ciphering and deciphering with a Vigenere Cipher. I haven't really used it, but I still know how to do it perfectly. It's fucking awesome.
I suck at FPS. Awesome at RPG.
I am quite a fast learner. Seeing how I learnt the Cipher on Wikipedia in half an hour.
I have a small build, which makes me a typical nerd build. I am not short though.

@Holy Granola:
I like it. It reminds me of something I read from Hofstadter, although I don't remember which book it was. He says something like,

Imagine a book with an index that starts on page 634. The text of page 634 reads as follows:

Errata

Page 634: Title should read "Erratum".
