Turn 16 [1000 AD – 1100 AD]
Middle Ages

Game Notes:
-A vast majority of players sent in their turns, so I decided to compile this turn extra early. Anybody that did not send in their turns will be compensated next turn, and had all wars/actions occurring to them postponed.

Nations

Diplomacy

Cultures

Religions

World Events
-War is declared upon the Byzantine Empire by all of her neighbors. She is also excommunicated from the church, and in retaliation, founds her own church. The empire is quickly crippled by the multiple invasions, and all of her foreign lands declare themselves independent of the Byzantine Empire almost as soon as the war begins.

Angmar Imperium (WitchKing)

Govt: Republic
Army: [=====|=====]
Navy: [====|======]

Tech: [=====|=====]
-The fleet is sent out to blockade Byzantium, but unfortunately the narrow straights of Bosporus and the massive coastal defenses in Byzantium itself prevent the fleet from leaving the black sea.
-Attempts at negotiation for coordinated attacks with the Germans proves entirely futile, as they have a terrible hatred for the polytheistic barbarians of Angmar
-The soldiers are encouraged to loot to their hearts content so long as they do not murder or rape the civilian populace. But they do as they please anyway.
-Expansion all the way to the Baltic is ordered, but there are no men to send after the order to send "all forces" into the Balkans.

Cattonia (MadCat)

Govt: Kingdom
Army: [=====|=====]
Navy: [===|=======]

Tech: [=========|=]
-Studies into disease prevention don't end well, as doctors are stumped as to what even causes infection in the first place.
-Gothic architecture as far south as Africa? You bet! Nyan has the groundwork laid for a new cathedral that mirrors Franco-Gothic art styles.
-Trade with Prometheus is opened as their past aggressions are mostly dropped.
-A lunar calendar is adopted, and the national library begins compiling all of its information into short articles within a massive encyclopedia.
-The ballista is improved upon, and the trebuchet is adopted by the army.
-Conquests along the coastal region continues.
-Cattist priests feel the need to disguise themselves as they spread the faith, and as a result, a lot of people are starting to think they are Muslims or Catholics when they aren't.
-An army is sent out south, and quickly encounters an extremely strange nation. Not strange in the fact that they are different, but that they are the same. A quick glance at their town structure, religion, and military equipment has led Cattonians to quickly come to the conclusions that this nation is the descendant of the long lost southern legion of Cattonia.

Falconia (DouglasJFalcon)

Govt: Kingdom
Army: [|==========]
Navy: [==|========]

Tech: [==|========]
-The Falconian king attempts a mass genocide and resettling plan upon the Celts. That, combined with an invasion of Viking territory, and the public persecution of people of the Kolinahr faith leads to a massive uprising that completely disposes of Falconian control over Britannia.
-Attempts to invade Vinland fail completely as the nation back home collapses and far too few men are sent for the conquest.
-Out of the former lands of Falconia, a nation of native Celts arises, called Scotland.
-Legends about recent events propagate the nation.

Fasier (DarkErmac)

Govt: Kingdom
Army: [==|========]
Navy: [==|========]

Tech: [======|====]
-Steel production increases marginally, to the point that few things in the military are made of straight iron anymore.
-Copper, silver, and gold are regarded as valuable metals, and coined for use as currency. Despite the fact that copper is pretty much everywhere in the region, people still value it highly… for reasons unknown.
-The Huari are attacked after they refuse to be absorbed by the Fasier. While at first the attack goes well, the Fasien armies approach Cuzco and a violent horde of natives overwhelms the far from home army, and crushes it. They quickly storm southward and completely shatter Fasier's control over its northern reaches.
-As a result of the failed incursion into the Huari region, the Cuzco people have begun to dominate the region under a solidified kingdom, and have begun to adopt many Fasien technologies.
-An attempt is made to build an iron ship. It sinks.
-Mathematical studies reveal various new facts about circles and triangles, valuable in construction and distance triangulation.

Mertola (RocketPropelledPanda)

Promethean Caliphate (Vlad)

Army: [======|====]
Navy: [====|======]

-A few small defensive buildings are erected in Egypt, but then quickly abandoned as a new Egyptian state emerges and the Byzantine threat has left.
-An invasion of the Byzantine Empire goes along swimmingly as most of their forces are invested into the Balkans.
-Junks are being adopted from the far east into the navy, and Promethean ports are beginning to look a lot more like Shanghai.

Rossiya (RussianFedora)

Govt: Republic
Army: [====|======]
Navy: [=|=========]

Tech: [=========|=]
-Byzantium is invaded, and there is little opposition all the way up to the Aegean. Cavalry proves to be supremely valuable in claiming land quickly and outflanking the minimalist Byzantine garrisons, while the Greek flamethrowers prove themselves to be incompetent, slow, and short ranged. The only real use found for them during this campaign was smoking out forests that a Byzantine raider might have been hiding in.

Sydney-Syserror (BSOD)

Govt: Monarchy
Army: [====|======]
Navy: [=======|===]

Tech: [========|==]
-Magwoli is ordered to spread westward, and they do so.
-Charts of the Pacific islands are drawn up for a better understanding of just how vast the empire is.
-An alliance is forged between Sydney-Syserror and Christchurch, with the latter agreeing to pay a pittances to protect from any foreign influence.
-The theater becomes a popular attraction in large cities. For one reason or another, a lot of the plays are dark and upsetting, causing a cult-like new wave of depressed young self-abusers.

Espania (QuakerPerez)

Govt: Monarchial Republic
Army: [====|======]
Navy: [=|=========]

Tech: [======|====]
-An invasion of Morocco is commences shortly after it breaks away from the Byzantines. While initially unsuccessful, the campaign pans out eventually, capturing Tangiers and the newly discovered Canarians.
-An invasion of Sardinia is unfortunately cut off by the French, who arrived first.
-Ships armed with trebuchets prove to topple over when the weapon is fired, and the idea is abandoned in favor of the tried and true balistae.
-The hourglass revolutionizes time keeping and rapidly spreads to the rest of Europe.
-Attempts to settle in Iberian lands with Teclo people fails as the locals become enraged that they are not wanted. Previously loyal lords decide to shift their respect to a new king, mostly to Aragon.
-Due to persecution, Navarre declares its independence.

And thus the Emo has been invented. Thank me later guys.

An update just 9 hours later? Wow, you are on a roll tonight Syndic

Can't wait to see the Mongols in action. I got my popcorn ready :D

@Falcon

Man, bad luck with Scotland dude. If humanitarian aid existed in this era, I would send you some.

Last edited Dec 24, 2011 at 02:25AM EST

@Mister J

That's really awesome dude. If we make it to turn 30 a gif of the whole process would be epic win!

I'd slow the frames down just a tad though so its a bit easier to follow

[edit]

I noticed the black line connecting Syserror and Christchurch in the diplomacy map. Does that signify a different kind of relationship or is it meant to be a green allegiance line that has not yet been colored?

Last edited Dec 24, 2011 at 02:36AM EST

@MisterJ: Awesome. Have all my kramas.

@BSOD: Okay, here's the thing. Paint.NET has this issue where if I don't deselect a line, then any edits I make to the line properties for the next line will apply to the previous line first. I was drawing diplomacy lines, and then switched to draw attack lines, and thus I accidentally made the diplomacy line for Christchurch a black arrow. Its supposed to be green. Thanks for pointing that out, I usually don't notice issues with stuff that happens on the edges of the map. I'll fix it next turn.

CAN I DO ANYTHING WITHOUT ANOTHER EMPIRE SHOVING THEIR WANG INTO MY BUSINESS? AM I GOING TO HAVE TO KILL EVERYTHING?

Ugh… I'm not going to get much farther as a pagan state am I?

Coming next turn:
Previously unknown "Wang" horde invades Angmar with over 9000 troops to strip them of their virgin national resources.

Hello Syndic, could the pm I sent still be counted in even if I send another pm for this turn? I was just wondering if that was what you meant by “compensated next turn,” if it is not what you meant, please explain what you mean by that on the actual thread as I’m sure I’m not the only one who would like to know the specifics.

By compensated, I mean that your actions will count for two turns. ie: If you decided just to expand of unclaimed territory, you would expand twice as fast. Of if you were at war, you would have resolved two turns of war in one. Such a bonus only applies this turn to England, Naronius, and Mertola.

But no, that was a joke. A hundred years isn't enough to make anything worthwhile.

So, Syndic, what would you recommend for keeping the Mongols at bay?

Nothing can stop the horde. Their advance into Europe was only halted briefly when every kingdom and knightly order stood together and even then, it was only a minor setback for Batu's horde. He continued on into Bohemia and the HRE, only stopping when news of Ogedei's death reached him. All of his generals had to return to Mongolia for the election of a new leader who, with the influence of his dear mother, was able to claim the throne despite being a sickly drunkard. Said leader was about to move to Russia, possibly to overthrow the Golden Horde and Batu's reign, when he died on the way. Perhaps assassinated. Internal struggles for power and disagreements over leadership quickly crumbled the empire almost as soon as it was formed.

Then the entire game, up to this point, has been totally redundant for Europe and Asia.

Fuck that.

So then. We need assassins… lots of them…

I'm thinking suicide bombers and disguised missionaries…..

Genghis Khan was extremely tolerant of other faiths, and often sought council with Christian, Muslim, and Buddhist missionaries.

Eastern Europe and Southwestern Asia. Only yourself, RF, and Vlad will be seriously effected by the Mongols. Vlad much less so (possibly not at all).

I know that the Mongols were fans of having semi-independent states. If we were to become subservient states, would we "lose" the game?

Like, would we still be able to rule our nations within the confines of Mongol command?

I'll be giving y'all instructions on how to deal with the Mongols this coming turn. But for the most part, that is pretty much what will happen. Just don't piss them off while they are occupying your nation, or you might have something similar to the Siege of Baghdad happen to you. They managed to do to that city worse than two atomic bombs could do to Japan.

The Mongols are reasonable. I'm sure if I pay a tax and do as they ask, they'll be more than happy to let me be.

Oh don't worry. Once the Mongols finish up, then it's relatively smooth sailing judging by the state of things.

Then? Then I'm coming for you, Panda.

Also, will they be coming THIS turn, or the next? Because they don't technically come to around 1216, and the next turn would be about 1200…?

Awesome, we can have a fun little party with baked goods and opium.

In this game's timeline, the weakened eurasian silk road has led to economic downturns that will cause the Mongol Khanate to rise a few decades earlier than IRL.

Party Hard.

Although really, I'll probably forget about this by the time I reach America.

Also, will you be displacing Native Americans? I'd rather you not, they were good people.

@Syndic: Ah, well then, time to juggle empires.

No, I won't be doing anything to them, really I want to see them become actual nations. However DarkErmac seems to want to murder some of them although that is just what it looks like so far.

Last edited Dec 24, 2011 at 03:08PM EST

I need PMs from WitchKing, DarkErmac, RF, Quaker, and BSOD. So I guess I'm only halfway done.

sigh

I'll go watch some anime or something.

The Mongols preferred vassals over pittance. You'd have to devote your armies to their campaigns if you want to side with them.
