Here's my Theory:
The parents send Ruby and Max to Grandma's house, while they are going to a specail trip. However, the died in a car crash, so Granny has to take care of them. When Ruby is old enough to take care of herself and her little brother, Max, the Granny gave her own hme to live in. From that day on, the two live their normal life, doing what they usally do, blissfully ignoring of their tragic past.
