I think the problem exists because AIDS wiped out an entire gay generation in the 80's-90's. I've talked to some old gay men and they told me at the height of the epidemic they were going to a friend's funeral every week. The result? An entire underground culture wiped out. Of course, homosexuality doesn't spread genetically or through infection, new gays are being born every day to straight parents. As a result, the gays of the early late 90's / early 2000's had no real point of reference. Where before you could expect one generation to tell its stories/transmit its culture to the next -as with all (sub)cultures- now they were almost completely without any elders. So the young gays then tried to puzzle together their identity from the fragments they could find, the most obvious ones being the gay pride parade thingy. The extravaganza took flight from there.

Gays used to be normal men and women living normal lives and being dressed normally. Standing out pretty much guaranteed you got into trouble. But now every LGBT thinks they have to scream their identity to everyone. It has some positive results like getting rights (making a lot of noise does that), and some negative ones, "50% of british youth not straight" my ass.
