How the fuck does a Thwomp stay in the air?

I know this was asked in a /v/ board before, but how does a giant rock that's about as easy to move as a giant rock (if the Mario Maker artbook is any indication) able to stay on the ceiling, and for that matter, how does it get back up?

Very thin but super-strong string that connects them to (tiny when necessary) motorized pulleys. At least in the 2d Mario games, I don't remember seeing them in levels where there doesn't appear to be a ceiling.

thwomps create a current of hot air that helps raise the thwomp through the air. It balances by using it's balance sensory organs to maintain its balance. It actually kills not by its sheer weight but the force of the spikes impaling its victim.

Well, theoretically, if they were made of magnetic anti-matter, and the ceiling was an electromagnet, and Mario and the Thwomp were in a vacuum, then boosting the electromagnet's magnetic field could cause the Thwomp from just being held in place to being launched to the ground. And it wouldn't be the collision that killed you, but the explosions that occurred as the collision occurred. If I'm getting my physics right, which I'm probably not, 'cause that stuff's difficult. And either way, it seems a bit far fetched.

Thwomps are hollow, and have very thin shells for bodies. They take in helium through their mouths by filtering out the other elements in the air through a specialized organ, just enough to lift them off the ground. When they want to land, they open their mouths and release all the helium, dropping them to the ground.

Tiny hands at the tip of their top spikes with which they hold on to the ceiling, and tiny feet at the tip of their bottom spikes they use to jump.
