With the Philippine elections on the way, the candidates (particularly the presidential candidates) are campaigning like crazy. Undoubtedly, the internet has become a great weapon in the campaigning war. Nearly all of the the presidential candidates have Facebook pages: Noynoy, Gibo, Villar, etc.
The internet has also been used by the detractors of presidential candidates. Take for example this, this and this.
In fact, the use of the internet as a campaign medium has contributed something to the internet itself: the Philippine’s first political internet meme.
Yes, you heard me right. An internet meme.
What are internet memes in the first place? It’s actually difficult to explain. According to Wikipedia (It knows almost everything), an Internet meme is “a phrase used to describe a catchphrase or concept that spreads quickly from person to person via the Internet, much like an esoteric inside joke.”
Here’s a list of well known memes from squidoo.com. Here’s another list of memes (from one of my favorite blogs) Also, here’s a website that catalogs most, if not all known memes.
So what is the Philippines’ first internet meme, if it exists?
I believe that the Philippines’ first internet meme is Manny Villar’s campaign song, in particular, the lines “Nakaligo ka na ba sa dagat ng basura? /Nagpasko ka na ba sa dagat ng basura?”
It’s true that there have been other Philippine internet phenomena before the Villar ad, like the Hay Men! Tunay na lalake blog (which I love!). However, I don’t consider the Hay Men blog as a meme because it doesn’t have the same impact/appeal as the Manny Villar ad meme. It’s not as identifiable. The thing with the Hay Men blog is that, as of now, it’s just a blog. The same goes to Utak Tilapia and all the other sarcastic political blogs out there.
