After spike spiegel fights vicious, and kills him; he collapses ending the series with a bang.
It is presumed that he died, i mean he did sustain a shitload of cuts and lost plenty of blood.
But the way the show presents its themes, it isn't certain whether or not spike spiegel simply woke
up from his dream.
The anime shows that spike spiegel simply thinks life is a dream, hence his careless nature, and his enjoying of sleep.
There are also moments where spike should have died, such as in the church scene, or what happened on calisto
Maybe he was simply dreaming, and his encounter with vicious simply woke him from his dream, maybe he simply was never alive to begin with.
Maybe he was sent back to the solar system for the same reasons many ghost stories say ghosts are sent back, to resolve the issues that prevent them from going on to the afterlife,
Maybe when he collapsed infront of julia, that was him dying.
He couldnt go to the afterlife, he had no future.
Maybe thats why he said he's doing to find out if he's really alive when faye confronts him.
Maybe thats why spike finally died after fighting vicious, his problem was resolved.
(which might explain the smirk he has on his face while he says "bang")

Here's a fun fact: You don't have to take every single thing a character says literally (i.e. "life is just a dream").
I know that last battle was brutal, but if he can survive a similar encounter along with a several story fall, landing head first to boot, I'm sure he survived the finale too.
