Originals Vs. Remakes

What makes one better than the other? People say that the original movie is pretty much always better than the remake but is that always true? Which one do you tend to like better?

The original will be always better than the remake, thats a fact. I literally can't remember a remake that is actually as good as the original.
The Thing remake, Carrie remake…uuhh…The Evil Dead remake is okayish but its a single special case out of one million.
I think it has to do with the director. It is important for the director of the remake to understand the ideas of the original movie, its purpose and its themes. When you grasp the true meaning of the movie, you are ready to make a remake, bearing in mind what aspects could be improved.
But no ma'am, the intention of the remake is far from paying an homenage. Most of the time, they end up replacing everything and the remake is nothing but a poorly bastardized version of the original.
JUST..sighs
Just take the Thing 2. They wanted to improve the ol' movie with cheap ass shit CGI woopity doo technology..then they completely forgot that special effects didn't make the Thing awesome, there was also the plot and the fact that an alien could be right behind you.
There are some good remakes out there…but the number of shitty remakes is bigger.

It mostly depends on if the director is remaking it because they want to see it remade or if it's because they want the money.

One remake that was better than the original which comes to mind is True Grit.

Aren't remakes supposed to fix the original's problems or at least remake the film into the new perspective?
Anyway, it really depends how do they execute it.

For example: Scarface is seen as one of the better remakes, while Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the bad ones.

Older films didn't have as much production value or budget as most modern films. The higher the budget of a film is, the more people working on the film and the more polish it gets. But its eventually polished to the point its somewhat plain and straightforwards. (More money added to a film, the less risks taken)

However I despise the people with nostalgia goggles, because it doesn't matter how good these remakes are they will always complain and say these remakes are outright bad. And that tends to be the exact opposite of true.

I think my favorite remake/adaptation is The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Movie. I've read the book, watched the TV series, and watched the Movie, but between the TV series and the Movie; I like the Movie better. True that the TV series was more faithful, but the movie was able to bring the feelings of a quirky scifi to life in a way the original wasn't able to.
