Remember that Marble Hornets movie? Well...

Another Slender Man movie is being made. And the official trailer came out today. Pretty much everyone knows who Slender Man is already, so I can spare the backstory, however I want to note that this is being released 4 years after the infamous 2014 Wisconsin stabbing. Now I will show the official trailer, but keep in mind, seeing how it's a horror movie, there can be NSFW imagery involved, so keep note of that, if you wish to not watch the trailer.

Now, the reason I mentioned Marble Hornets is because of Always Watching: A Marble Hornet Story, which was the first official Slender Man related movie to hit theaters, though it was originally video on demand at first. The film reception was negative for not living up to the original web series. Another Slender Man movie was made called Beware the Slenderman on HBO, however this was a documentary based on the stabbing, mentioned earlier.

Reactions towards this new movie is mixed, so far. However, the father of one of the two people responsible for the stabbings found the movie "distasteful" as according to this Washington Post Article.

My opinion on this movie is mainly mixed, as I see myself a fan of the traditionally Slender Man based mythos, games, and stories, including TribeTwelve. I don't have any interest in watching a movie like this, however some people might still try to watch it.

The best thing I can say about the trailer is that the cinematography looks great and some of the imagery is decently spooky. Other than that it seems to be following every predictable horror movie trailer cliché in the book. We've got the creepy laughing children, the jumpscare windup (where the music fades out and then a spooky thing jumps out), the works. I'll reserve my judgement for when (or, rather, if) I see the movie, but expectations are pretty low. I don't think we're getting another It Follows or Get Out-level horror film.

As for whether or not it's morally acceptable to release a movie like this after the stabbing incident, I'm quite mixed. For one, I don't think an entire brand or character should be tainted because of a messed-up incident happening out of its control, but at the same time it's poor timing to release a trailer like this after the recent sentencing of one of the girls involved, and the father of the victim has the right to be offended by something like this. There's still an entire fandom that's been waiting for this movie to be made for years, so delaying or cancelling it would only make people angry, yet it would also be somewhat disrespectful to not at least acknowledge those affected by the stabbing incident. Again, mixed.
