They state the reason is because they want to focus on their deal with Netflix so technically it doesn't look like Disney fired them over the controversy regarding the final seasons of GoT (for reference, Disney fired the original director of Episode 9 when a non-SW film he made a few years back bombed hard, and I guess they don't want to risk another highly divisive movie like Last Jedi). GoT and SW fans on other sites are quite happy with this news though as given some really baffling statements by the duo recently it's even clearer why GoT fans hate them and why SW fans were understandably worried about what they might do had they stayed as writers on a trilogy of their own (in particular they stated they began dropping magic from the hated later seasons so "mothers and football players" could understand the show, and it should be noted many athletes and parents have been vocal about how much they hated the "no longer following the source material" seasons).
